I have a new external, one of a pair, that is making increasing clicking sounds. (about 4 to 5 months old. the clicking sounds started a few weeks ago.

I was planning to just replace it, but what I can't understand is why all diagnostics just tell me it's fine.

Any thoughts on what to do?

(No real fear of data loss as it's already being backed up to the 2nd one)

I have seen a number of USB external drives fail because of the "USB interface"....The drive itself has been good. In my situation I removed the drive, and put it in a new USB hard-drive enclosure.
I would test the drive in another enclosure before disposing.

The diagnostics do not evaluate mechanical components such as the motors and the swinging arm, which is usually the source of a tick.

It may be from the preventive wear leveling:

Is it a WD Easystore?

Is it a WD Easystore?

Is it “preventive” or “pre-emptive”? From the manual for an Ultrastore drive

Pre- emptive Wear Leveling (PWL)
This feature provides a solution for protecting the recording media against mechanical wear. In cases where the drive is so busy with incoming commands that it is forced to stay in a same cylinder position for a long time, the PWL control engine initiates forced seeks so that disk lubricantmaintains an even distribution and does not become depleted. This feature ensures reliability for applications that perform a high incidence of read/write operations at the same physical location on the disk.

We should also note that Jake said "about 4 to 5 months old. the clicking sounds started a few weeks ago" so this appears to be something new with an existing drive,

You could download the SMARTmon (external link) tool set and have a look.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
