I finally had a clear night that I wasn't busy last week, so I busted out the William Optics GT81 to try Carina again. Last time I could get to it I was very very new and did it no justice.

WOGT81, 60s (about 2 hrs worth) exposures, iso 3200 on a NEQ6r pro .. and a canon 1500D. Rubbish processing in line with my rubbish skills

Well I like it!

I can’t speak for the processing cause I can barely spell the word, much less do it. :)

I know when I look at it my mind wonders what would happen if you had a mono camera and took some Ha and combined with what you got. ?

Just a thought.

A while ago I decided to go OSC for my next camera (dedicated astro) ... but after watchng some stuff from various people ( looking at you sirius doggy!!) I am about 60/40 towards a mono with filters.

First world problem ... but a good problem to have!

Looking good so far. If your tracking is good, I'd bump up your exposure time to maybe 2 minutes or longer. Not sure if you are auto-guiding?

Also, in your processing, it looks like you are crushing the blacks. Everyone thinks space is black, but in areas like this and around other great nebulae, there's lots of very faint nebulosity that's getting lost by doing this. I'm guilty of making my skies too dark as well. In my latest image, I really tried hard to not do that and you can see the very faint reddish nebulosity almost through the entire frame.

I probably are crushing the blacks, my issue is I like it ... perhaps I'll unclench and see how it looks then....

I've not done any setting of the black point on this one.

I can already see alot more of the fainter wispy detail in your second version. And the sky looks much better.

I'll get some more data tonight and see what that brings. Finally one clear night... one per month is getting to be annoying.

It is very cool, as it is massive as well as interesting. This is my second go at it, new scope and filter and better guiding so it's a lot better. More data collected tonight so I will have another pass at processing soon.
