I apologise in advance f this has been posted before.
I just got a sony A7ii last week (was going to get an eos RP but got a really good deal on the sony) and i’m still learning the new system.
I’m getting an error when i try to open the sony raw files on Lightroom 5.7. The lightroom support sheet says a7 ii is supported and i think i have the correct version of both the sony and lightroom software.
I know upgrading to to adobe cc would fix my issue but i dont want to go with the subscription approach yet unless that would be the only option.
Anyone have any any ideas to get this to work? For now im converting to dng to get it to edit on LR.

LR 5.7.1 (not 5.7) and ACR 8.7.1 are the minimum versions required to support the Sony A7II. I suspect the x.x.1 update added support for the camera. :)

This is what I see on the "About Lighroom" page. Sorry the version numbers are too small but it says Version 5.7.1 and Camera Raw 8.7.1.

Pretty bizarre as the Adobe site says the A7II is supported. The A7RII on the other hand is not supported.

Yep, might probably look for alternatives. I'm checking Luminar as it seems a lot of people are liking it.

I like the new "Photography Plan" subscription model that Adobe has as it costs about the same (maybe just a bit less) as when I was upgrading LR every version and PS every second version (was $208.95 US for PS and $82.95 US for LR) and the products are always up to date. Not a good deal though for anyone that uses a piece of software until it dies.

If I didn't use PS I would have contemplated going with an LR alternative. Too bad Adobe doesn't have a LR only option without the 1TB cloud storage. :)

Yup, have looked at Adobe's subscription plans. I'm thinking about the LR +1TB plan. it's about $10 USD per month here so not too bad. Just need to make sure Adobe will allow me to temporarily suspend my subscription in case my schedule gets too busy ;-)a

If you stop your subscription you will still be able to access your images but you will not be able to edit them. I don't believe there is a process that supports temporarily suspending and restarting support. Most likely you will have to cancel and resubscribe. Cancelling and re-subscribing might even cost you more then maintaining the subscription.

I should have responded to this post earlier. The LR + 1TB plan is not similar to LR 5.7 or LR6. When Adobe went subscription in 2017 it introduced a new mobile version called Lightroom (LR). This format is not as robust as LR 5 or 6 and sends your files to the cloud automatically. I have never installed it.

The version that is similar to what you are used to (LR5) is now called Lightroom Classic, LR Classic or the app icon that is named LrC. It requires local file storage with an option to sync to the cloud. If you do it only sends Smart Previews that use almost no cloud storage space at all.

I would suggest to get the 20GB Photography Plan which includes LrC, LR and PS for $10 a month. If you need 1TB of cloud storage your can get this plan for $20 a month. If you want to use the mobile version only (LR) then the 1TB plan is for you.

Just a note. The intent is to either install LrC or LR on you desktop. While people have found workarounds to use both they weren't designed to do so. Simply said both programs want to be the boss :-) It can be done but takes a bit of research. If you plan to use LrC and use it like you have with LR5 only then you only need the 20GB Photography plan for $10.

No you can't suspend. It is based on annual contract so there are penalties. If you contact Adobe they can be good about accommodating you in special circumstances. It's not that they care but it is about numbers like cable companies, etc. Threaten to leave and they will try and keep you. While I didn't really need it I called them during COVID last summer and the gave me a few breaks. They may honour a one time suspension for special circumstances but I doubt they would on a regular basis.

I just did a random search. I didn't read it. I pay for the whole year so I doubt I'd get a refund. If I didn't I wouldn't care.

Thanks for the detailed descriptions. I didn't know about the LR and LrC differences. I might go with the LrC + PS option. I've been planning to try to Luminar but the past 2 weeks have been pretty busy.

Yeah, I confirmed this with Adobe and early cancellation is 50% of whatever is remaining of the 1 year contract.

That's the photography plan and you get LR as well. You want to try/use it later.
