For # 643, lets see something showing the effects of the weather (or time) on things, people or the landscape: from sun, rain, snow, ice, wind or just a long life.

Enjoy!

not for consideration for this week's challenge, just some weathered artifacts from my local museum. i was hired to photograph all of their accessioned items for their record keeping software...

on a ship's bridge forward of the helm (wheel) there are two iron balls on adjustable arms. they are on either side of the compass. they are called Kelvin balls. the left (port side) is red and the right (starboard side) is green. they are used to calibrate the compass relative to the magnetic field around the steel hulled ships.

this kelvin ball was retrieved from the steamer SS Charles S. Price which sank in the deadliest storm on the Great Lakes, in November 1913 when the Price was capsized on 10 November during the "gales of November" (does that date sound familiar to any Gordon Lightfoot fans?) and finally sank on the 17th. 19 ships were lost, another 19 foundered and 250 people (sailors and others) perished.

another ship that was lost during that storm and remained lost until 1986 was the SS Regina. among the thousands of items retrieved by the salvaging parties, were bottles of still intact Scotch Whiskey and Champaign. another item retrieve is this stack of spoons

Aged tools go back to the 60s. The Ritz can was acquired in the late 70s while on Guam and holds my accumulated odd nuts, bolts, washers, screws, bolts, whatever over the years.

Great photos one and all! Always hard to choose. The B&Ws and near B&Ws work really well for the topic. Collapsing house, and the fence photo- nice, soft colour effect. Headstones too - weathered and at rest. Rich colours in Ritz, ship hull and "Prince Albert". Also really liked the museum artifacts. Thanks Ltdave. I know the Lightfoot song well (Link in case someone hasn't heard it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoF5tuzu4ws (external link))

Having to make a choice, it is rwmson's "You Better Let Him Out!". Colours, light and shadows, textures - age. Looks like the fellow just walked away from his work a hundred years ago and left his tobacco behind.

Thanks to everyone!

Next, Roger?
