Looks like the pin that pops up to lock the lens in place will not pop up now. I have tried the trick to slide my thumb of the button to possibly jar the pin loose and that worked for a bit but it is stuck now. I decided to send it in but the estimate was over 400 hundred. I was wondering if I have any cheaper alternatives. This should be a simple fix and that seems very high.

Perhaps a tiny drop of isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) followed by a drop of thin oil on the pin might work (dont use WD40 ).

Have you tried a different lens on the camera body? Does the lens turn to its proper position on the body? In other words, it positions properly but doesn't lock?

Have you tried using a paperclip/pin/etc to jiggle the recessed pin a bit?

Yes all of my lenes will not lock in place. The pin is stuck down so there is no way a lens will lock in place. I have used a paperclip to try and wiggle it loose and it doesn't help. To me it feels like the spring is still working and not broken which makes me think it has a small nick or debris lodged in it. I am a little nervous about putting a drop of oil on it. Most of what I read says to put a very tiny bit with a toothpick on the pin when it is extended out.

I may try a little rubbing alcohol on it to see if the frees it up.

The best I have seen for a DIY repair is to put a small drop of machine oil (a very lightweight oil used on sewing machines and other more precision instruments). Put a drop of oil on the tip of a toothpick and drop it in the hole. Take something hard and tap around the hole, maybe using the paper clip to jiggle the pin a bit. Also, work the lens-release button back and forth. Speaking of the release button, have you tried working it back and forth a good bit?

ETA: Those are light taps...just light tapping maybe in conjunction with pressing the lens-release button or pressing the pin with the paper clip.

Best wishes!

Review https://www.lensrentals.com …-canon-5d-mk-iv-teardown/ (external link) and you’ll see the 5DIV is not the easiest camera to work on.

On the repair, ff you are talking $400+ by going through a local shop, check directly with Canon or an independent repair that actually does the repair in-house, as opposed to sending it away. If you deal with someone who just sends it out, about $100 will be for their shipping & handling.

I read a bit more about the shop repair and it looks like this is a rather involved repair. But, I've also seen a range of repair costs around $150. Was that Canon repair that quoted the $400?

Having not researched/Youtube'd/Google'd this topic yet I'm surprised the read the repair is not as easy as removing the four screws that hold the metal mounting ring to access the spring/pin assembly. I agree, if it were my camera I would first try a SMALL amount of isopropyl alcohol to see if that will clear away whatever is causing the jamb and then/also lubricate using light machine oil applied with a toothpick, just like watchmakers do.

edit: Having said that, unless you change lenses in an environment that would make it possible, it seems unlikely that debris could contaminate the pin. So it's more likely the assembly is worn and is failing.

I tried to find something on YouTube and came up empty. Unless I am not using the right search words. I figured 4 screws removed and I would be in but didn't want to try unless I knew for sure.

Yes it was canon

Canon is the last place I would consider for a repair to a Canon camera. . Used them several times, and always felt like I got ripped off, even with the CPS discount.

Here's a guy I know, Mark Neeland, who has always done good work for me and others, for significantly less than Canon charges for the same repairs.

Another good independent shop as well, many of which will likely be less expensive. One that I have used for routine sensor cleaning is Perfect Image Camera in Lancaster PA.

Their website is at https://perfectimagecamera.com/ (external link)

...and with these qualified props a couple of shops are going to wonder what the heck is going on with the sudden spike in repair business! :-)
