Hello.

I got my factory fresh RF70-200 lens yesterday and am having AF problems.

It can focus fine on fairly close objects, less than about 40ft but beyond that it never hits the target.
It seems the lens always focuses on something behind the chosen af point

(edit) When I say back focus I am talking yards not inches.

I updated the firmware to the latest version but this had no effect.

FWIW.
I tried all AF cases.
Used a single centre spot AF point where possible.
Kept the shutter speed above about 1/1600s.
Had IS on all the time.

I'll try again later under more controlled conditions but my guess is I'll be returning the lens.

not an auspicious start by the sounds...I take it every other lens you own works flawlessly?
(likely a silly question but is the A/F switch set to 2.5m to infinity rather than 1.2m to infinity?)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
TF posting: here :-)

I have not checked the a/f switch, I'll do that later.
I have an RF 85mm 1.2 which never ever ever misses focus regardless of subject distance.

Maybe I need to reset the camera!

I'll try and put up some samples later although I'm not sure how to display the AF point in a jpeg converted from raw.

All said and done, there is only one other guy on the whole internet who has exactly the same thing so I guess it's a Friday afternoon job.

You need to update the Firmware of the lens. This has been a known bug.

Yes I did that although the firmware was for front focusing.
Anyway, yes, it is now at the latest level according to Canon Europe.

Oh sorry, i mis-read that.

Spot AF doesnt work that good on subjects that are far away. Did you try the single AF Point (not Spot)?

Is the camera firmware also the newest version?

All firmware up to date.
Actually, single af point as opposed to spot is one of the things I'm going to try after work.

Ok, firstly thanks to those who responded.

Went home, reset the camera, removed the lens and the battery. Set the camera back up the way I like it and voila, all is well.

I don't recall anything in the Canon lens firmware upgrade guide about resetting the camera post changes but it seems to have done the trick.

That or I'm an idiot. Either way, now I'm a happy idiot.

Which 70-200; f/2.8 or f/4? I reread the posts but didn't see that bit of info mentioned.

The reason I ask, is that I have a recently purchased RF70-200 f/4 L that has issues similar to what you describe.

It is an R5 body.

The lens is the RF 70-200 2.8.
