The US Navy had purchased some Canon AE-1's...what was their use? I know the Topcons were used for submarine duty.

Nice collection. Here's my trophy case. The F3 is the only one I used at work. I used an F2 like this for a long time. This one was my dad's. I used a Konica in high school. Got the F for $50 on Craigslist. Looks nice there, huh?

I try to keep them dusted.

I sold my 5D4 and will buy the R5. The main reason for doing this is the 100-500 lens. It should work great for my needs.

I’ve just sold my 5D4 and the R5 arrived two days ago. I did it whilst the was some value left in the 5D4 and would happen eventually, so why not now. I didn’t take much of a hit on the 5D4, it was as new and along with the grip I only dropped £200 on the new price. (Grey import and bargain grip) I missed reach with the cropped sensor when using my 100-400 lens so the intention is to get the 100-500 lens. Though the price and little difference in performance puts me off.

There is a good deal currently for the R5 grip with a free battery in the UK at the moment for anyone interested.

Nice collection! The F3's dew shield has taken a beating... You noticed how dusty they are, they are hard for me to reach due to my desk being in front of them. I get a lot of dust due to the dog and also we are at the convergence of Rt 95 and Rt 1, each a few hundred feet away.

I mostly carried a Leica, they let us choose our cameras, but all 3 were used for routine jobs such as car accidents, grip and grins, documenting new construction or virtually anything. However what we used the most were the Mamiya Press in 120, those we used for award ceremonies, autopsy's, general photography

As a long time 5D4 evangelist, this may come as a bit of a surprise...

The R5 (and R6) eye AF is enough of a game changer for birding and wildlife that I would recommend the R5 to anyone interested in upping their action related autofocus game.

I also just sold off my 1DXIII.
IMHO the 1DXIII's mirrorbox AF system was not enough of an upgrade vs. 5D4 for it to really make much a difference in how I shoot birds in flight. was it better, sure. and without the R5 I would have kept the 1DXIII

However, the 1DXIII's BEST AF advancements all were tied to the live view DPAF system. ie: to get the most out of the 1DXIII, I had to shoot live view. for birding this meant a cumbersome loupe, and awkward hand holding of any already cumbersome kit.

Enter the R5 (R6)
The same amazing AF in the 1DXIII Live view in more affordable smaller kits, and one with a much more packed pixel density (another reason I often shot the 5D4 over the 1DXIII)

R5 eye detect for birding is even more advanced than the 1DXIII, backed by 45 MP.

The 1DXIII is sold, fully funding + the R5, grip, batteries and EF converter etc..
I have no regrets.

I can't really explain how much the R5's eye detect has changed how I shoot birds in flight. It's literally doing the work for me, in a way that even the 1DXIII could not.

I've been recommending the 5D4 for years over so many other DLSR,. and selling off 1D models (3X now) putting my actions behind those words. Certainly I also valued it much more than my EOS R (also sold, that's 4x cameras bought and sold that could not compete with the 5D4)

But the AF in the R5 is a very different beast than the R. It IS an advantage for what I do with a camera.

Essentially I am now down to two cameras, R5 and 5D4, which for me is the fewest bodies I have owned at once in a very long time.

Right now my 5D IV serves as a companion (not backup) body to the R5. I use the R5 primarily for birding and wildlife whereas the 5D IV works in my basement home studio with some of my EF lenses. For studio work, the advantage of the R5 over the 5D IV doesn't come into play as much as it does with birding and wildlife. There will surely come a time, though, when I'll consider the R5 as either a companion or a backup body to a more advanced camera down the road and that's when I'll decide on the fate of my 5D IV.

I'm actually thinking on getting one!! Amazing camera with prices dropping. I can NOT bring myself to sell anything, it's a sickness! Just started back to film, pulled out my old gear & found a Nimslo 3D camera that's going anywhere from $200-$400 on Ebay!! I see myself shooting with it, but not making GIFs. Logic says to sell it.. I'm illogical.

I have the same sickness, I just love cameras. I sell or give away astronomy telescopes but not cameras. Well I did give my 50D, 70D,80D to my son as I upgraded each time. I am trying to justify keeping my 6DII by saying it could be a lender if someone wanted to borrow it, although that has never happened. My middle son is happy with APS-C and doesn't want to try FF. Whatever I do I will keep my 90D and 7DII as I often set up 3 cameras on tripods by my hummingbird feeder and then hide away from it and fire remotely, lucky imaging, a R5 may change that.

Guys how does the eye AF work at long distances, over 100 yards away, say with a 100-400Lii or the 150-600 at 600, or the new 600mm or 800mm?

can it pick them up or is just the body at that distance, and what about cluttered backgrounds close behind the bird?

When the distance is far enough for the Eye-AF to struggle, then you can go into the 1.6x Crop Mode, or you can simply use the Spot Focus.

I have experimented with both ways, and the former method is just a waste of time unless you want to lock in on the Eye-AF for compositional purpose. At that distance, though, I'm always cropping to compose in post, so it's just much faster to go with the Spot Focus.

Also, Spot Focus in the cluttered bird surroundings. Programming the AF-On and the * button next to it, one for Eye-AF and the other for the Spot Focus comes in very handy for such situations.

Here is a shot of the Nimslo & the mint A-1 I just got for $229. They let me choose a retro strap, which lens I wanted (50mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8, or 50mm macro. went with the 1.8, but I WILL be getting the 28mm), 2 rolls of Fuji film, a brand new battery for the camera, & 2 "Death to Digital" stickers...
