I have not bought a R5 or R6 yet, but do have an EOS R. I had not used my 5D3 since getting the R back in December 2019, so I ended up selling it. I also sold my 7D2 after using it just once in 2020 (mostly due to travel restrictions). I figure that the dSLR bodies will only continue to lose their value, and mine just were not being used. So, I banked the money to put towards an eventual R5 or R6 purchase. I am down to the EOS R and M50 bodies for now.

My next step is to figure out my lens lineup. I have the RF 24-105 f/4 L and RF 35mm f/1.8 lenses. I just picked up a RF 50mm f/1.8 and plan to try it out for awhile before deciding if I will sell off my EF 50mm f/1.2L. I will probably also sell my EF 40mm pancake, EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS and Sigma 105mm macro lenses. I am not sure about swapping out the EF 100-400mm IS II for the RF 100-500mm, though. There is currently no RF version of my EF 16-35mm f/4 L IS, so that will stay in the bag.

To go RF lens or stick with L series was a bit of a quandary for me. In the end I’m at peace with my decision to swap out the 100-400iiL for the RF100-500 as this one gets the most use. I’m keeping my 24-70 and 70-200iii L lens as they work well with the control ring adapter. I use them the least out of my glass so can’t justify the cost to change with their current performance and quality. I don’t think the EF lens will drop so much in value compared to DSLR bodies, because of the current high cost to change like for like.

Well I just got my dream set of EF lenses and canon comes out with the RF series. The Eos R didn’t do it for me apart from its compact size. I’d love to have the R5 however, only thing is I find it to expensive at the moment for me to justify its purchase.

Buying the R5 would have me replace all my current EF lenses with RF lenses down the line. Especially since the optical quality of the RF lenses is superior to the EF equivalents. starting with the EF L 50 mm, which I think is the least quality lens of my current setup. Also can’t wait for them to bring out the RF 10-24 mm.

Still think it a-shame that the R5 doesn’t have the build in gps like the 5D4.

Upgraded my 5dmkii to an EOS R, had mixed feelings for it coupled with the new raw format, got an 5dmkiv and now seem to reach more for the R when I actually do take it out (which is not much anymore) :-(

Ugh, sorry, misread R5 as Plain R. Just striking out on forums lately :( I don't have an R5

I looked at what an R5, new CFast and reader, battery grip and batteries would cost me figure around $5K. That is a lot for just an advanced amateur.

I am thinking for now using my 5DIV 7DII and my 90D (for longer range BIF), yes my hit rate will be lower but I am just doing it for fun, although I am going to try to sell some of my waterfowl images at the local gun shows where I display my Boston Police revolver collection and see if they sell.

In the meantime I am saving up toward an R7 - hoping the come out with it and is not just another 20mp sensor which would lead me to look again at the R5.

Title Fairy Alert!

You're giving the TF some wonderful fodder to work with here

I have not got rid of my 5D4 even though I purchased a Canon R6 several months ago. I have however found I have had no desire to use it since.

I am loving the fact I can review my photos in the EVF and also see all the menu settings here too.

I also feel the image quality has improved and I am still using only EF lenses. (I do have a RF50mm but have only used it a couple of times - similar use to my EF 50mm 1.8)

The image quality thing I cannot back up and may just be due to having not used the 5D4 for a while.

Anyway I am tempted to just sell the 5D4 and save up for a second R6 for my back up camera. The difference in pixels hasn't bothered me yet tho I am just an amateur photographer.

I have no doubt I’ll buy R5 or some other canon mirrorless camera in the future, but I will keep my 5D IV for nostalgia. As another user stated, this is likely the last Canon 5 series DSLR and would like to keep it as the historical pinnacle of the series. I may even add 5D Mark I which I used to have, it was such a milestone in DSLR history and have fond memories of it. Similarly I have EOS-1V and use it from time to time. I’ll keep my Zeiss ZE lenses and 50/1.2 forever and use it for fun forever, even if my main body is whatever is latest and greatest. In some odd way as time goes by I’m less and less interested in new equipment and tend to use older film equipment. Photography is just a hobby for me and digital is becoming boring to a degree. The journey is just as important as the destination for me, even if it may seem as traveling backward in time. Rediscovering film, processing it and then seeing the negative come out is a great experience. Similarly I can see one day in the distant future shooting with 5D and having a blast with optical viewfinder and obviously outdated technology, and still able to make great photos.

5D IV, EOS-1V
50/1.2L, 200/2.8L
Zeiss ZE 21/2.8, 35/2, 100/2
Hassleblad 2003FCW, 50/2.8, 110/2, 250/5.6 SA
