Mr. Red is obviously a cardinal but is there more than one type?

Hmmm. You're retired. You live in Florida. You have some very nice bird photo gear. Time to start learning your birds.

Some folks find the Merlin app useful. https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/ (external link) I haven't used it since I started learning birds years ago with an old fashioned hard copy Petersen field guide. Still a good one, and Sibley is also a good start. I also have the Sibley app on my phone. The thing I like about the books is you can flip through it and start anywhere. Not to memorize individual species, but to learn how birds within families (wrens for example) are similar, and how families differ (wrens don't look like sparrows).

I could stop here. You know the old proverb "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll spend all day in a boat drinking beer". Or something like that. But getting folks addicted to birding is always fun, so here's some help.

The 1st photo is indeed a Northern Cardinal. There are related species, but this is the only bright red one in North America.

Second is a Chipping Sparrow. Lots of different sparrows and they can be tricky. But the keys on this one are the distinct black line through the eye with white between it and the reddish crown and an unstressed breast.

Third and fourth are Carolina wrens. The thin slightly curved bill and erect tail are typical of wrens.

Number 5 is a Palm Warbler. Crown and eye lines look a little like the Chipping Sparrow, but notice the very thin, straight bill. And no sparrow has a bright yellow butt. Palm Warblers walk with a distinctive bobbing motion.

Number 6 - more Chipping Sparrows I think, but not 100% sure.

Next one is a Blue Jay. Other Jays are blue, but not Blue Jays.

Then you have two woodpeckers. First one appears to be a female Downy. The Hairy Woodpecker is nearly identical, but it's larger with a proportionately heavier bill. Note the long white patch on the back. The next one is a male Red-bellied Woodpecker, and a very nice shot. Don't bother looking for a red belly. It's faint and you'll rarely see it. The red nape is diagnostic and does not extend onto the crown in females.

The little gray one on the feeder is a Tufted Titmouse.

The last one is a dove, but this is a test. A. Mourning Dove. B. White-winged Dove. C. Eurasian Collared-Dove.

It's a B. White-winged Dove

She has the notable white edged wing, so she isn't a Mourning, and lacks the notable Eurasian Collar marking.

How did I do?

Very good! Get familiar with your backyard regulars because spring migrants will be moving through very soon.
