Just announced, Super Resolution. When you crop too tight or have a low resolution camera and need a few more pixels.
Looks interesting.

Very cool. I can't wait to see it in LR.

I've been playing around with it. It's pretty impressive, especially with RAW files. Can't wait to try it on some pics of the moon.

Looking forward to trying it on my aviation photos where I didn't have enough FL and had to crop a lot.

Wonder how this compares to Topaz Gigapixel AI.

I see one possible downside to this. I only post 1024x768 image sizes to my Flickr account with the (perhaps foolish) idea that anything that small can't really be printed out and sold commercially. This new PS enhancement might make it possible to enlarge images of that size enough to print them at a commercially viable size. I don't do much printing, so maybe that's still too small.

I've been playing around with this using some of my old Canon 20D files. I'm impressed.

That is a good point, I have some photos on Flickr that are 1200 pixels wide hoping to discourage image theft, I recently had to stop a couple of people on Ebay from selling 24” x 36” posters of my photos. I wonder if they used something like Gigapixel AI to up rez them.

I have seen a couple of comparisons of the two already, one was at Fstoppers but I don’t remember where the other one was.

A 2006 headline for an article in Shutterbug magazine (remember photography magazines?) espoused the idea that the "megapixel race is over" due to the existence of "Genuine Fractals" what was then the best digital image upscaling plug in for photoshop.
(It's now owned by oN1 and called oN1 resize or something like that.)

And of courser the most recent darling of upscaling is Gigapixel AI. There have been others in between.

ie: Every few years a new upscaling algorithm is baked into a plug in that will "revolutionize photography", and make all your little thumbnails printable on billboards. Super Resolution is this weeks flavor.

My first reaction to this was wasn't Genuine Fractals doing this more than a decade ago, even if not as effectively? Of course, back when I first saw an ad for GF, a 'low resolution' camera was around three to four megapixels; now it's what, 16 to 20 megapixels.

Anyway, a Peta Pixel article stated that SR will be coming to LR in the near future. And if I read the article correctly, which I might not have in my insomniac condition, it operates from Adobe Camera Raw...so let's gin up the JPEG versus RAW debate; I'm feeling nostalgic for the days when Genuine Fractals ruled supreme and 12 megapixels was certainly all you will have ever needed.

Everybody (not just here) seems to be missing what I think is the really important point with this new release. Up-rezzing rendered digital images (JPG, TIF, what have you) has been around for longer than I have had digital cameras (22 years) Over the years we have seen an evolution of algorithms, from the primitive Nearest Neighbor to Bicubic, Lanczos, S-Spline, etc, but they all need to be fed a RENDERED image. Super Res works directly on Raw files and outputs a Raw file with the same edit metadata, so there is no break in the non-destructive chain.

>> so let's gin up the JPEG versus RAW debate;
OMG, do you think that debate still has legs?

Yes, that is what makes this one interesting to me.

I was wondering about that. I cannot justify purchasing Gigapixel AI but I do have Topaz Sharpen AI and it does work very well on most shots

....

This is true, my own post was more reacting to the fact that many of the claims just sound so familiar, and that some seem to be eating up the claims.
Having it built into ACR, and upscaling RAW I expect to be an advantage for sure. It's an evolutionary step nonetheless.
