First time poster here looking for tripod advice.

I’ll say first that I almost never use a tripod for photography, but recently got a Tamron 150-600 for my Nikon D750, and the kit (about 6 lbs total) is just a little to heavy to use for any extended period of time. I’m mainly interested in shooting birds and other wildlife with this setup.

I have a cheap zomei tripod that I mostly have used with a 4 lb. spotting scope. The tripod is a good size for me (65”), packs down small enough to just fit in my pack (18”), and is relatively light (~4lb.). But even at 8 lb. for the tripod and scope I get tired of lugging it around after a couple of hours, and I never was able to get the conversion to monopod to work.

So, I think I am looking for a carbon fiber tripod that converts to a monopod that is approximately the same specs as the one I mentioned above, but hopefully a bit lighter. My kit is ~6lb, so I’m guessing a load capacity of 12-24 lbs. is what I need. I’m looking to spend up to $300. Both lens and spotting scope have built in arca style plates. If not for the fact that I want to use it for the spotting scope, I would be tempted to just get a monopod for the weight factor.

So far I have looked into the promaster xc-m 525ck. Spec wise this seemed to fit the bill pretty well, but I’ve read at least a few reviews that take a dim view of promaster generally. I have also looked at the 3 legged things Brian, Benro tripster, Sirui A1205, and the Oben CT-3565. The reviews of all are mostly good with some bad ones mixed in.

I think I am leaning towards the Oben CT-3565, but was wondering in anyone had any comments about this choice for my situation, or had any other suggestions?

Thanks

Stated 'load capacity' of tripods is totally meaningless, as there is no standard in the industry on how to compute the load capacity!
I do not think Lester Bogen (the founder of Bogen Products) intended his fully loaded weight to be listed as the load capacity of one of his tripods, yet he posed for this ad photo in magazines to prove there is no correlation between what a tripod can sustain vs. its spec for load capacity

Generally speaking, the max FL you intend to routinely use is the real determinant of how beefy a tripod you need. My Gitzo 25nn is good for up to 300mm, the Gitzo 35nn is good for over 300mm. But a spec which is rarely stated is the ability of the tripod to resist TORSIONAL forces, like wind pushing on a long lens. But FL max is also determined by which HEAD you use!

Straight to the point.
If you are able to go a tiny amount over budget thats fine or wait for a sale like I did.
I returned a very nice and over my budget $499.99 carbon fiber tripod. Tripod Weight: 3.7 lb Load: 39.7 lb
The carbon fiber just seemed a little wiggly for my personal preference.
Nothing major. But it was just enough to bug me before the return window ended.
l did more research and made a huge decision.
For 1.8 lbs extra tripod weight I am getting an 15.4 lbs extra Maximum Load.
Whether an individual desires to carry the extra weight is all personal preference.
I personally chose this aluminum Sirui SR-3004
It weighs 5.5 lb tripod. Max load 55.1 lb
On sale for $299.99 Not $399.99 ($317.98 with tax)
The option it without any center column makes a big difference when using a larger lens.
Next I purchased the SR-66C Center Column. Weighs 1.1 lb Max. Load 77.16 lbs
Note. This is optional accessory sold separately. $139.90 ($150.00 with tax and free 2 day prime shipping)
My total cost for both with tax is $467.98
Bottom line is I have a very beautiful and stable professional tripod.
