Have to read the details of Canon patent. Just last night I saw a movie, set in the future, Bladerunner 2. A young woman was shooting macro shots of insects in a virtual world. She was using a camera with Plus and Minus buttons as the only means of adjusting focus. And you could see, in a rendition of her viewfinder, she would focus too close, then too far, and have to continue this back and forth adjustment overshooting the ideal plane of focus, because all she had was Plus and Minus control. The Canon patent would need to overcome the issue of overshooting focus adjustment.
edit: just read the article, and as the article points out, the Canon adjustment control found on the R was not well received. They would need to understand fully the characteristics in operation which made that a flop on the market, in designing this new control's characteristics, to better mimic use of the classic focus ring (or zoom control) in its characteristics (other than the simple rotational aspect). I know I hate the zoom control on my Canon point & shoot, as it overshoots what I want!
