To do it right you need two things I would say. First the right space. You need the room to work in and it needs to have a clean background.

The right light. For me with these it was 4 4801 black line speedotrons wit h4 heads each (16 heads total) in a 10 X 30 foot overhead soft box.

Allen, I suspect the expectation is a photo of the owner, with his car in the shot, rather than the classic automobile showpiece, shot under a monster double-diffused softbox (as seen in the Corvette shot).

Similar natural light to a very large soft box would be overcast and then just watch your backgrounds. The car is still the star. Get that right and everything else will fall into place.

When doing an environmental shoot, there are a couple of things I would remind you to take.

First and most importantly, a decent yard broom. It is so much easier to remove all the little stones, and cigarette butts from the scene. So much better than realising you really should have done it, and now have to colne them out.

Then on a similar vein, take some trash bags, and work gloves. That way you can remove the larger bits of trash too. I say take the trash bags, because actually removing it, rather than just moving it about is the right thing to do. Probably make you a bit more welcome with the locals if you want to return and shoot the location again.

As said above, try to shoot on a day when you have nice even overhead lighting. A nice bright overcast is good. Or of course you could go with a clear blue sky, but without direct sunlight. Shooting after it has rained can be good if it will give you a nice puddle to as as a reflector.

My daughter took these while she was still pretty new to any sort of photography.
