Hey there, smart people!

So, after many months of them being O.O.S., I was FINALLY able to get my hands on an R5 as a replacement for my aging 5D MKIII. With that, having a rear touchscreen is a brand new option for me.

So, is my title question even possible?

After trying a few different search term combinations, I could not find that this question had been asked here previously ... and the manual is, well a Canon manual and quite stingy with it's secrets.

I ask as it would be MUCH easier to choose a focus point from the rear screen, than having to reach the front of the camera and move an Auto-Fucus point with the camera controls.

Thanks for any info!

All the best!

I don't know the answer to your two year old question, but my assumption is that HDMI is meant to be a display technology, not a control technology.

EDIT: re-reading your post, are you asking if the regular touch screen becomes disabled when HDMI is connected? Probably not.

You definitely can control the camera, including moving the focus points by touch, using the Camera Connect app and a phone/tablet.

When I fit an ATOMOS HDMI external monitor to my R5 in photo stills mode, it disables the EOS R5 rear LCD.

The only image I see is on the ATOMOS monitor which is not touch sensitive on my model for the EOS R5 icons and functions, only the ATMOS NINJA on-screen icons.

However, when you switch to Movie Mode, I believe that the EOS R5 rear LCD then becomes active (I have not tried this as I don't shoot movies).

It seems that the Canon engineers decided that stills shooters do not need to make use of the rear R5 LCD screen when connected to an external monitor. A frustrating implementation decision which I hope they fix in a FW release.
