This isn't entirely an R3 issue or a mirrorless issue (I have found dead batteries with my 7D2 when I left it turned on and plugged in via USB) but the scenario you describe happened today with the R7. My family went to tour a historic site and I used the R7 because it was small. Upon return to the car I just dropped it into the center console storage but must have left it turned on. When I got home it was warm and the battery was dead.
I'll have a look through the VF settings, but does anyone know offhand if there is a setting that can prevent this while still giving good VF functionality?
Well, the viewfinder thinking somebody is looking at it is indeed a mirrorless issue. That doesn't happen with a 7D Mark II, for example.
I'm not sure what kind of setting you're looking for, but one where the viewfinder does not come on when looking into it doesn't sound as anything giving "good VF functionality". I think we need to learn to live with it.
