Strap question: I've been carrying my EF 300 on a Canon strap over the left shoulder. Worked well with the 7D2 attached (I'd have the 70-200 on the R7 separately). 7D2 is gone and R3 is here and for now I'm using the R3 on both lenses. I find that the straps hang up on the R3 due to the larger body size. Just to clarify, the strap is on the lens. I shoot, and when I put it down the strap is hooked underneath the body.

I like having the strap on the lens so I can take the R3 off and put it on the 70-200, but it just doesn't work well. And I think the lens is too heavy to use with the Spider Pro holster, which is what I carry the 70-200 on. If I go back to using two bodies, I'd probably have the R3 on the 300 with a TC, as the R7 and the 300 don't seem to get along that well.

Any ideas?

My wife and I both use this:

We've had the straps for at least 10 years. For a big lens like the EF 300 2.8 II, the strap is attached to the lens. For smaller lenses, we attach to the camera body. We both carry two bodies. If we choose to take just one body, one of the straps is removeable.

We like our straps, but BlackRapid has several other double straps.

So on a lens like the 300 you have the connection on the tripod foot? Do you use lenses like this?

Yes. If a lens has a tripod foot we attach to the foot. We’ve had the 300 2.8 II, EF 100-400 II, RF 100-500, and the EF 100 2.8 macro. Attached to the lens foot on all of those.

On my 500, the strap is on the strap lugs on the lens. I've run into the same thing, with the 1D bodies, but it's never seemed to be an issue. I use Optech straps, maybe that's the difference?

I also use an Optech dual harness, but I've never used it with the 500mm lens. IMHO the dual harness is best used with two camera bodies attached, not a big lens strap.

I use a 300 f/2.8 on occasions.

I own two Black Rapid straps.
One has two slings (of which, either can be detached) and I have single Black Rapid sling.
I use the single sling the most.
The Black Rapid slings distribute the weight of the camera, beautifully.

I have three of these, and they 'terminate' each of the slings:

https://reallyrightstuff.com …nob-clamp-w-strap-bosses/ (external link)

These clamps are extremely well made and I can connect it to my 300 directly, or to an Arca-Swiss plate on the body of my camera.
Doing so allows for unimpeded use of the 300 on a tripod that has an Arca-Swiss equipped ballhead.

I have three of these types on connectors, screwed into each of the Really Right Stuff clamps.
Whatever sling I am using, connects to the item below:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com …363001_fasten_r_fr_5.html (external link)

Each snap connector on each sling, has one of these.
It seems to make the setup bulletproof:

We use similar arca-swiss compatible clamps.

Forgot to mention we also use the BR Lockstars and FasterRs on our straps.

Thanks for the ideas. I would have thought that the 300/R3 combo would be too heavy and bulky to swing controllably from a single bottom attachment point, but I'll give it a try.

With the 300 on a traditional 2-point strap, it doesn't swing all that freely which is mostly nice because I can push it back around my hip and it will stay there while I'm using the other camera. The Black Rapid system seems optimized for the opposite, which will be very nice for actually using the lens. I've been meaning to try one out for a while now so this might be the time.

It looks like there isn't a lefty hybrid. I've been carrying the 300 on the left, since I have the 70-200 on the right, and I feel like I'd want a cross-body strap for that weight. So that would mean getting something like a lefty Sport. For now, though, I can just use the PD Slide with some sort of foot attachment.

I recently learned of these EOS R3 e-books from a post on this forum.
I searched and searched for that post so that I could thank the member who posted it, but I cannot find the original post.

I just bought the e-book for £18 (USD $22 or so).
When downloaded, it turned out to be 562 pages long, and it looks awesome!!!

I have paid more money for takeout food and my feeling is that if I learn just one new thing that saves frustration, or helps me when using any tool such as this camera, it is money well spent.
(Possibly the pinnacle of reading the manual beforehand: “Flight, EECOM. Try SCE to Aux”. The closest thing I will ever get to being like John Aaron is that I did buy a Try SCE to Aux coffee mug!)

Anyway, Page 80, 81, and 82 discuss battery expectations and usage estimates.
I will respect her copyright, and not ‘clip it’ or quote any of her 1,400 words about it here.

The e-book seems to contain hundreds of images used for various examples.

I also use the Black Rapid strap but have it connected to the camera - have never had an issue, used it on the 1DX mkII with the ef 200-400 and now the R3 with the RF100-300.

I use the Cotton Carrier G3 to hold my heavy cameras and lenses. It distributes the weight over both shoulders.

Replying to my own earlier comment. I finally took possession of my RF 100 - 300 about a month ago. Absolutely superb. Have had a Motorcycle and a Car race meeting to prove its worth but now sadly the season is over. Performance with extenders is exemplary. If the rumoured zoom 1x to 2x extender beomes a reality I shall be in the market for one of those. Did get some nice shots of the cat in the tree on the other side of the (dirty) kitchen window though. I will no doubt find subjects as time progresses. Two Teas

Today while walking around a cross country meet I wore the R7 and 300 hanging by the lens foot as a test. I don't think that's for me; it just moves around and spins too much when I'm trying to cover some ground. For standing in one place it probably isn't nearly as bad, though, so I won't give up on the idea. I'll be going to a band competition today where there won't be nearly as much walking. Might try it again.
