There is no R1 at this point. No development announcement or anything.

True. But since Canon is announcing the R3 as between the 1DX3 and the R5, it might be a safe bet we’ll see a R1 down the line in a few years.

I’m not making a prediction…….. just guessing.

I agree, there will likely be yet another pro high res, and yes, it is probably at least 1 year off at this point. That is when I might get an R3, there will be several that will upgrade.

here is canon rumors saying this is official press release

https://www.canonrumors.com …JfnQIG9RQiIXvClNkKANv9y-E (external link)

24 Mp sensor.....why ??

I have not switched to a mirrorless body yet. Personally, I feel the 1Dx3 is a better for for my needs. I think Canon dropped the ball on this thing. A 30Mp sensor is what most where hoping for.

I suppose they feel 24mp is enough for the target audience. People complain about the R6 and it's measly 20mp but it blows away many if not all cameras 30mp and below for IQ and low light performance.

If 24 isn't enough, I'm sure the R1 will more than make up for it. They'll pack that thing so tight they'll start calling them ...

wait for it ...

I completely agree. I'm hoping that the rumor websites got it wrong and it's actually more than 24MP.

Either way, I'm getting up super early for the announcement at 3am, and will probably place my order anyway.

don't think i'll ever understand introducing a camera at 24mp, when the competition is pretty much doubling that....i mean, i know 6K cameras aren't in my budget...but why would people choose this over sony/

Because they like Canon, perhaps?

If they had to make the choice, either more pixels or higher frame rate, then I prefer the frame rate.

YES! We can now record video longer than 29 minutes!

Just placed my preorder!

Here's what I learned (at 3am this morning):

  • 24.1 megapixels (yeah, I wanted more, but the other features make this something I can live with.
  • 1/64000 sec max shutter speed (electronic)
  • white balance - 5 settings can be registered! I've been asking for more than one setting for years.
  • Customizable Q-menu
  • touch-and-drag for autofocus is now gone! Not a big deal because of the smart controller, but good to know in advance.
  • up to 6 hours of continuous video recording (depending on battery life and what card you have)
  • 6k raw video (not my thing, but nice to know)
  • 4k 120fps
  • miniHDMI jack, instead of the dinky microHDMI port that the EOS R5/6 has

I'm assuming it doesn't have the dinky microHDMI port that the EOS R5/6 has.

Here's the product page:

and unfortunately has micro HDMI.

The R6 and 5d4 are very close in IQ. It has yet to be seen whether the stacked sensor will do anything additionally for IQ.

I hoped it would have a few more MP (maybe then it would have been an ideal all-round replacement for my 5D4), but I absolutely understand that 24MP may be more suited for (what I assume is the main target market of) sports shooters.

According to Canon Europe, it's miniHDMI (which I can live with), not microHDMI (which was a joke).

But watching Jared (Fro) Polin's video, he says microHDMI:

Now I'm really confused!
I still haven't found any pictures of the HDMI jack, but I'm assuming Jared is accurate, because he used his Atomos recorder and probably knows the difference between microHDMI and miniHDMI.

It would be disappointing to have microHDMI again.

They will stay with canon for 3 reasons

Familiarity with canon products

Heavily invested in Canon Glass

Sony Menu systems, Ergonomics, build and battery life......... SUCK

I suppose if you need video capabilities then this is a good way to go. Canon video cameras are very expensive. 6 Hours is impressive but I am assuming thats not 8k either:-D:-D:-D

Heres the deal for me....Had this been 30Mp I was seriously considering getting my first mirrorless body. The R3 is $6000. We are talking 3mps..The R6 is 20mp's....Thats nothing for improvements on a sensor....its current sensor technology repackaged...reminds me of the 40D and 50D fiasco.....Im currently using the 1Dx2. Its a 20mp sensor and has a much better AF system than the R6. The 1Dx3 is a 20Mp sensor as well. 1Dx2 has more bells and whistles but basically same cameras..... New 1Dx2's are going for $4400 and Refirbs are going for $3999...1Dx3's are at $5999 for a refirb and 1Dx3 prices are about to drop ... Everybody says mirrorless is so much better. If you are comparing to a 5D4 probably so....BUT... I think not when you compare to 1Dx customizable AF systems.... Ive tried the current canon consumer based mirrorless systems and they are not better in my opinion. I guess if you have to have auto eye focus than mirrorless is the way to go. But the 1Dx AF systems are bulletproof when you know how to set them up for your shooting needs.... I have been shooting since 1973. Never had a problem hitting my subjects........And, I have been on canons 1Dx AF systems since 2006....never have i had an issue hitting what I wanted the camera to hit with 1D systems...I think my next camera will be a good clean used 1Dx3....people are stupid and are starting to give them away now. I suspect with this announcement, a good clean low count 1Dx3 can be had for under $4000. Im starting to book for 2022 so I will probably get a new body early next spring....Its not going to be a R3 for me. I would rather get an R6 at $2500 or get a 1Dx3

The res really does kill it for me.
I LOVE this camera,. and really wanted to be in the first shipment, but as it stands, I think I will wait. My 5 year old 5D4 soldiers on, and the R5 will give me much of the new AF tech with even MORE resolution. Again we are forced to decide between 1D features and modern up to date resolution. The merging of the 1D and 1Ds into the 1Dx continues to plague Canon even into the mirrorless era, where we now know the bandwidth is available to move the higher res data fast enough to create the no compromise solution. Canon just has to want to do it. All the tech is available and already in their own cameras.

When/if and R1 is released with a real high res sensor, I will then decide if I can swing that exorbitant price, or suck it up and shoot the R3 at 24MP at a lower used price.
