I've sold most cameras as I've upgraded, but the 1D2 stayed as a back up and second body for so long that by the time I even considered not using it and selling, it's value was so low it was a tragic idea to sell. So i kept it thinking one of my nephews or someone would develop an interest, but that never happened.

exactly, and it isn't like I got much for my 5d2 or 5d Classic either. I had the 5D4 for quite a while before I sold either. Now I wish I had them to sit on a shelf and glance at every now and then if nothing else. Shoot the Classic was my entry into the digital photography world, loved that camera.

I still have my EOS 620 but nothing between that and my R. Does that count? LOL!

That's a hell of a long time investment! :)

Just in case my post was misunderstood - I should have worded that better as perhaps not everyone reads everyone else's gear list or looks at what camera took what photo over the years but the context of my post is what cameras I CURRENTLY have and not what was bought and sold. There were many in-between the 620 and the R but they were all sold along the way.

Ah, yes, I did misunderstand. Makes sense, and I should have understood based on the the discussion.

Im in a similar boat but for different reasons. I bought the 1Dx2 NEW at release and was one of the first to get it. Its been my workhorse ever since. I cant find anything I like as well or a mirrorless that performs better than this camera. i can find cameras that have more electronic features, but for sheer performance in so many situations....the 1Dx2 is a better camera. Im seriously considering buying a used clean 1Dx3 end of the year with a very low count. Those will be given away pretty soon when the 1D mirrorless comes to market

As much as I love the EOS R5, this EOS R3 is the body I've been waiting for!

BATTERY LIFE
My original thoughts when the EOS R was announced were about battery life. I was a little surprised that Canon kept the same batteries for the EOS R as the 5D Mk4, but could also understand why because it made the transition easier for those who didn't want to buy a bunch of new batteries while gradually transitioning to mirrorless.

Similar to when the EOS R5 and R6 were announced. Canon did provide a slightly (14%) higher capacity battery to help soothe the battery life complaints, but those moving from the 5D Mk4 could still swap batteries back and forth and didn't need to purchase new batteries.

Assuming the EOS R3 uses a battery similar to the 1D-series, there's also the potential for more powerful autofocus (the 1Dx-series LP-E19 batteries are 10.8V-2700mAH, compared to the new LP-E6NH at 7.2V-2130mAH).
I hope this R3 body has dual processors like the 1D-series and 7D Mk2, and dual processors will suck even more power and could also benefit from better batteries.

THE FRONT BUTTONS
...you know, the buttons that SONY doesn't have.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.
Although I've never owned a 1D-series body (borrowed a couple over the years and loved them) the ability to configure the front DOF button on the 5D Mk4 and 7D Mk2 was one of my favorite features and I really missed that when moving to the EOS R. In fact I was almost jealous of Nikon users who got two front buttons on the Z6 and Z7.
When the EOS R5 was announced I was happy to see the DOF button return and couldn't wait to configure it the way I did with the 5D Mk4, but unfortunately someone at Canon didn't check that all features were being retained from the 5D Mk4 (like customizable Q-menu, but don't get me started on that).

Seeing those 4 beautiful front buttons just makes me happy thinking about all the possible configuration options, but better yet I'll be able to find them just as easily when shooting in portrait mode. Now I only hope to be able to configure them the way I want to.
Looking at this body it's clearly designed to be a photographer's camera more than a videographer's camera (not that it won't have really great video specs, because that's expected if Canon is to compete with Sony).

OTHER STUFF

I hope to see NFC and GPS return because I used both on the 5D Mk4. Sure, someone will say "but you can pair it with your phone to get GPS" but I say "how do you effectively do this when shooting with two bodies?"
As much as I love the ability to do things by connecting to my smartphone, I don't like the dependency of it. Make something work great as a standalone product first (even with a dedicated remote) and then add all the stuff that will tie up your main source of communication.

I mentioned this on the EOS R5 thread: if you're expected to power the camera off when not actively shooting (as Canon recommends) then you'll need to reconnect WiFi each time you power on again. Having NFC on the 5D Mk4 made connecting to WiFi really easy, just tap my phone to the side of the body and it starts connecting.
Given the price point of the EOS R it was understandable why they didn't include NFC, but I was really disappointed to see it missing on the EOS R5.

Please allow us to write everything to both cards!
I'm guessing here, but if this R3 body has dual CFx cards then maybe Canon will finally allow us to record video to both cards. I care way more about complete redundancy than I care about 8k video.
If they do this with video then Canon will hopefully finally fix the fact that the RATE button only applies to one card. That's much easier to fix than recording video to both cards but I've been waiting for that fix since the 5D Mk3.
We can record audio notes (R5 only, sorry R6 owners) but only to the primary card, so maybe they'll finally allow true redundancy and duplicate everything on both cards.

Resolution isn't a deal breaker for me as long as I have at least 40MP, which seems likely if Canon wants to stay equal to or ahead of Sony. Because this looks like a photographer's camera, maybe Canon will go all out and increase the resolution beyond the 45MP of the EOS R5.

Glad I found this thread because I'm going to jump on the R3 bandwagon as soon as the body is available. I might be eating Mac & Cheese or Top Ramen for a while as I save up, but it will be worth it!

I'll be right behind you there I think. Time and specs will tell.

Just for a hoot, I jumped into the WaaayBack Machine to see when exactly the first "Eos 3 Digital" rumor was posted on POTN.
It turns out it was in 2003, after the 10D, but a few months before the 300D (the first Digital Rebel) and before EF-S.

https://photography-on-the.net …thread.php?t=10538&page=1

And this rumor became so prolific/repetitive that the threads were getting locked all the way back to 2006.

So, nearly 20 years later, we finally get our EOS 3 digital! :)

Pretty wild. I knew it had been a long time I’ve been in some of them. I’m glad they are doing it and can’t wait to see some sensor particulars.

**one decision I have made. Outside of a financial disaster I’m never selling another piece of camera (lenses or bodies) that I own.

I sell my old gear, my family will have enough junk to go through as it is and all of that would just end up in an antique bay at the local antique mall anyways. If I don’t use it, I sell it.

Nothing wrong with that. I have at least two budding photogs to pass things down to. It will be out of date but aren’t all antiques? I have an A1 that I rarely use but I like to see it sitting there.
