I'm looking for a camera I can take to places where my DSLR can't go...... I'll be travelling to a rain forest (where naturally it rains a lot), and I'd also like to be able to take it in the water with me. I'm NOT going to be doing any serious underwater photography, at most I'd like to be able to take some shots while snorkeling.

Ideally I'd like to find something that can shoot RAW, gives me the option to control aperture and shutter speed, and has a decent zoom range. Shooting video isn't very important to me. I've seen some reviews for a few point & shoot style cameras that might fit the bill, but before I make a purchase I'd like to hear from others with some hands on experience. My budget is somewhere in the $400 range, but I'll go higher than that if absolutely necessary.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Very few cameras are made to withstand any submersion; cameras may carry the designation 'water resistant', but not 'waterproof'
Way back in the old days there was the Nikonos. Today there are these...
