I agree with Affinity, it's nearly a clone, it's fast, almost all the same functions, and the price is very reasonable for the full suite.

I tried to mimic a lot of things in GiMP and for some things its fine, but for many I was just not able to get the same results in GiMP unfortunately. But it could be my error as it seems to have more learning curve with different naming structure and stuff, I found it harder to find some functions.

Very best,

No mention of DxO PhotoLab in the article. I have been using it as a replacement for Lightroom for several years, and am quite happy.

Thanks for the info... I will try affinity. I like PS but I don't like to pay monthly... if the interface looks and feels like PS, I will buy it.

I could never use it as an alternative to Lr. I might be tempted to use it to replace ACR/Photoshop though, if I were still doing just Bridge/ACR/Photoshop. Haven't been doing that as my normal workflow since 2011. I just couldn't consider giving up Lr, unless you know of a DAM system with the same level of integration of cataloguing, access to the RAW converter, and of course the multiple output modules, not just a simple export.

Another vote for DxO Photolab.

I have DxO Optics Pro 9 Elite and thought it was the absolute best thing going for RAW conversion; then, I got DxO Photolab 2 Elite and I find myself loading images in Photolab that had previously been done in DxO 9 and the improvement is obvious and awesome.

I have found no other RAW editor that even comes close --- to DxO 9 or Photolab.

I never used the DAM feature within Lightroom, so I do not miss it in PhotoLab. I just need something to edit and process my RAW files.

A timely and relevant thread; thanks John! I will be checking into Affinity and Darktable, this week, I think.

Darktable is a great option with a modern scene referred workflow using linear Rec2020 and it is free and opensource.
Talk about color management!
There is a big paradigm shift however in the workflow and interface because the pipeline is visible.
If anyone want to start out, I have a beginners tutorial course on YouTube.

My solution is Canon DPP for top-grade demosaicing and basic adjustments and then PhotoLine (which will run most Photoshop plugins) for more demanding jobs on DPP-generated TIFFs.

I have old Mac book pro recovered from dumpster. Affinity is running fine on it. Dust bunnies removal, basic adjustments, dodge and burn and resize. It does it all.

I was a DPP die hard once. Develop and then TIFF to PS for some fine tuning, resizing and export sharpening. It was a nightmare for event shooting so after about 3 trials I switched to LR. Figures 6
months later they released DLO. I still keep DPP updated and still use it to pre cull before importing to LR.

What I found back then was DPP lacked export sharpening which is why the files always went to PS. It only had the Sharpen option during development which was for capture sharpening. They later added USM.

I find DLO and interesting animal. One of the only true digital lens deconvolution options out there. Most others are USM. Deconvolution also corrects for the AA filter so basically DLO would be part of capture sharpening I think? So is the Sharpening/USM option now for export? Most other software offers export sharpening when you resize and export.

I test DPP now and then and with all options applied I still prefer to send the file to PS for final sharpening.

Just wondering about your thoughts/workflow on this.

Forgot to say I had a link to an excellent explanation about DLO. Like many other valuable documentation Canon killed that too. I sometimes think Canon decided it would be better not to give out too much detailed information. :-)
