Hi all,

Has anyone else encountered this "Error 60" code when using the RF 50mm 1.8? Did I just get a lemon? I have confirmed that my other RF lenses do not generate this error, and neither do any of my adapters (dumb m42 ones and the Canon EF/RF one), so it's not the body.

I like the lens when it works, nice especially for the price, but when it's mounted the body won't even boot up 7 out of every 8 times or so. Reminds me of my Pentax kit with the DA* lenses that had failing autofocus motors.

Just checking here before I send it in and go without it for however long it takes to go through service.

Just out of curiosity, is the firmware on the camera up to date? Sorry, about the only thing that comes to mind. I know you said not the body, but I think Canon has pushed out firmware for new lenses?

Perhaps RMA the lens if possible, maybe a dud? Dirty contacts (shouldn't be since it's relatively new?) Sounds like a communication issue from the lens? Sorry I'm not giving much help here, just a few little ideas I'd check.

Reading this makes me nervous as I got my first RF lens due in soon and actually before had my R throw an error shortly after I got the camera turns out a cable was loose. Canon fixed it under warranty.

Same thing I thought about the firmware, but my R is on v1.8. Should be up to date. Doesn't look like they have updated the lens yet.

On start up it hunts a little before throwing the code, like it's trying to focus. It's different than my other RFs (35 and 24-105).

The R lenses have all been great to me. Not sure why this one just went bad. The first couple times out it was fine so no indication it'd be a problem and I've had it a few months so now I'm out of the BH return window.

this reminds me of the older problem like this, I think on a classic 5D, people suggested clean the contacts on the camera and lens. I am not sure if it still applies to the new cameras and lenses.

The lens works fine on my EOS R. I did get a message when I first mounted it to upgrade the firmware on the body, which I did immediately.

Probably just a bad copy. I cleaned the contacts too. Really frustrating cause I was really enjoying the small size and clean images.

It’s off to Canon now so we’ll see if there’s anything they can find.

Just to update this thread: Canon replaced the lens with a new copy, shipping was fast too. This one mounts and starts up immediately. Tried it several times, mounting and unmounting. Leaving it for a day, etc. Zero errors.

Two thumbs up.

They didn't give any indication for what was going on with my previous copy, so I just assume I got a lemon. If anyone else runs into a similar problem, it seems like right now there's not a fix (via firmware for example) available outside of warranty service.
