Hi All,
I’m getting into food photography as a hobby and thought it would be a good idea to use some calibration tools. If I want to do this correctly, do I need to calibrate my laptop monitor using something like the 48-swatch Datacolor SpyderCHECKR Datacolor SpyderCHECKR Color Chart and Calibration Tool SCK100 (bhphotovideo.com) plus a white balance tool for the camera like the WhiBal WhiBal G7 White Balance Reference Gray Card (7.5x10") WB7-RC B&H (bhphotovideo.com)?

I’ve neve used tools like these before so I’m a little confused. If I just use the Datacolor, do I still need the Whibal or similar?

Thank you.

A. The 18% grey card is a reference for recording the shot, it should reproduce so that

  1. the image renders NEUTRAL gray when recorded in the right White Balance and right Tint
  2. the image reproduces the 18% gray card (mid-tone) at about 50% tonality, when Exposure is proper

B. Separately from accurate recording of what is in the scene, to ensure the reproduction of the scene is accurate...

  1. The monitor calibration is the ensure that colors are reproduced by the monitor to your eye at the right hue
  2. and printer calibration is to ensure that colors are printed just like you saw them on the monitor, and this

    • might be using the color profile provided by the commercial print maker that you send images to, or
    • it might be a color profile you created for your own printer

Calibration tools primarily are used by many to create a monitor profile to address B1, but are not used if you send your images to a commercial printer to make your prints for you. You may or may not also need to create a printer profile, based upon your choice if ink and your choice of paper surface and vendor.
