Hey guys! Recently I have been dabbling with a little bit of astro-landscape photography as a way of keeping things fresh and exciting from what I usually shoot (weddings, product videos, corporate nonsense etc) and it's been really fun!
The one thing I haven't quite figured out is how to find reliable cloud forecasts to make the most of clear dark skies. Are there any websites/apps that you would recommend that help you plan a night of shooting?

It would be great to be able to head out knowing that I won't encounter any high clouds when I go out to shoot, as all of my local forecasts don't seem to cover that information.
Thanks in advance!

Cheers!
Sam

I've found that no one source is usually enough to be 100% accurate. I usually check 3 or 4 sources and when 2 or more agree, you have a good chance of it being accurate.
One of my favorite sites to look at cloud patterns and predictions is Astrospheric. You can advance hourly on the computer-predicted satellite map to get an idea of the direction and speed of clouds. I think it predicts out about 4 days. Obviously, the further out in time you go, the less accurate it will be as any weather prediction source is.

https://www.meteoblue.com/ (external link) is another good source. In the left column click on "Outdoor & Sports" then select "Astronomy Seeing".

https://clearoutside.com/ (external link) Is another source. Make sure you put in your location on ALL of these sources.

And finally, there are the typical sources that your local meteorologist uses.

If you check the top three sources, Astrospheric, Meteoblue and Clearoutside and they all say roughly the same thing, pretty good chances that it's accurate.

Thank you so much! I had been using Clear Outside but these other sources are amazingly useful. I had never heard of them before!

I've immediately saved them to my bookmarks so I don't lose them :-D

Cheers!
