Is there any harm in my 7DMkII sitting inside, on the shelf, with the GPS ON and the little GPS icon constantly flashing for days at a time ?

At first, I was always careful to switch GPS OFF, as I had been led to believe that leaving it ON would drain the batteries before bedtime and run up my electric bill.

Amongst these tall trees, it takes seemingly forever for the GPS to lock on; once it finally does lock on, it will stay locked on.

Also, it is hard to always remember to switch ON the GPS and very easy to have half-a-day's shooting and then realize the GPS is not ON.

So, a couple days ago, I decided to just leave the GPS ON; if it is already ON, I am unlikely to forget to turn it ON.

I was surprised to see that battery drain is negligible, definitely not the rapid draw down that I was expecting.

My only concern now is am I going to hurt anything by leaving the GPS ON all the time ?

No harm that I know of, but it will drain your battery a lot faster.

No, no harm at all. It is just a specialized radio receiver. The camera keeps a track log, it will get filled and the older data will get replaced with newer data. As mentioned before, the battery will run down faster.

As above. I tried just leaving mine on. No harm at all, but I didn't like it.

Part of my workflow, when I download a day's worth of shooting, is to throw a fresh battery in any camera I used that day. That way, in a few days or whenever, camera is all ready, just pick up and go. More than once, when I left the GPS on, I'd be 20 shots into a session, when the battery died.

Finally decided that, while I hate it when I forget, trying to remember to turn the GPS on at the beginning of the day is less of a problem than remembering to put fresh batteries in at the beginning of the day.

And I've added turning off the GPS to my post-shooting workflow.

I'm surprised you're not seeing additional battery drain... but hey, if it works for you, it works!

I had been leaving mine on all the time, because I didn't like waiting for acquisition time. Never had any issues except for battery drain. My workflow became: grab 7D, replace invariably dead battery with new battery, put dead battery on charger, grab 2 spares, then leave the house. I sometimes have to take spare LP-E6's out of that little coin pocket in a pair of jeans before tossing them in the wash. I find batteries in random backpacks. But at least I'm always prepared when that camera sucks down another battery...
