Hi I was asked to photograph a lacrosse team. Will be individual photos and team. This isn't something the parents wanted, was asked by the coach to take them. I've been trying to figure out what to charge for them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know alot is based off where I live etc, I'm just trying to figure out a ballpark range, then I can figure out a price from there. Still hashing out all details tonight

So, if the parents didn't want them, will you be selling the photos to them? Or is it basically just a session with the photos to the coach?

If you were asked by the coach, I would ask the coach what his/her budget is, explaining ... as to better figure the scope of work he/she might expect. This establishes the fact that the coach is the client, not the parents. Be prepared for the coach to then distance themselves from the request.

"Well, I just thought, at the end of the day, the parents would want this."

If that is the case, then maybe a flat session fee with the delivery of a team photo and individual. Is the coach giving them to the players as a gift from him?

Determine the number of hours the shoot will take, add to that the time editing will take and multiply that by your day rate and you should be able to answer your question.

So the coach (a friend) is doing it as a gift for the girls. She's coached then since middle school and alot are graduating. I do mostly wedding photography and single portrait sessions at the gym. The session should take a max of 3 hours. Still waiting to talk with her about what's happening with the parents. My normal portrait session with one person is usually 300$. Still working on my hourly rates since I don't do alot of shoots like this.

How much time is a single person portrait shoot, both for the shoot and the post processing?

Shouldn't take to long, whole shoot were looking at till 11am the latest and I'll be getting there around 8. I'll be setting up 3 lights, so the pictures will be starting at 9am. So I'll be doing test shots etc. The editing may take time cause I may be doing some photo manipulation for the team shot.

I guess I would look at how that compares to the work for a standard $300 portrait session and go from there. If similar, then charge that rate. If you want to give your friend a discount, figure that in. Or figure what your $300 portrait rate works out to per hour and then charge that hourly rate for this shoot.

the rationale behind the request is important, for example

  1. if the coach simply wants a shot, which is then given to each family
  2. if the coach wants a shot, which is to be sold to each family, with income from sales

If #1, since coach is a friend, consider prices that are lower than your commercial rate, but still compensating you reasonably for your time used.
If #1, and coach is merely an acquaintance (not real friend) consider offering a slight discount from your usual rate (but higher than you would ask from a personal friend), as goodwill discount gesture
If #2, rather than a separate session fee, I would simply price the expected number of orders to divide up the cost of a session fee, so all the print orders pay you fully for time and material

Consider that the coach may well be a volunteer getting no compensation, so getting blood from a turnip is difficult. It might similarly be a contribution of time from you as well, and payment only for materials (prints ordered)...paper in ink cost. Prints are cheap but good from Costco.
