Will the Sony flashes fit in a standard off camera hotshoe mount? I don't use Sony, but I've found a good price on Godox TT600s flashes. I only want it for off camera work to be triggered by an X-T2.

Thanks,

Mike

If you provide a specific Sony flash model, or camera model number we can tell with certainty. But Sony has been known in the past to depart from the general hotshoe convention with the adoption of the Minolta introduced iISO shoe in the Sony Alpha line. Sony acquired rights after the end of Konica Minolta's photography operations in early 2006. In about 2012 they re-adopted the standard hotshoe again in the Sony A99 camera, forcing to use an adapter to be compatible with older Minolta-style Sony hot-shoe accessories
So when 'Sony compatible' is kicked about, there is key 'when?' component involved.

In looking at Godox ads on Amazon, one can find entries like these

  1. for Sony Multi Interface MI Shoe Cameras
  2. for Sony DSLR Cameras a77II a7RII a7R a58 a99 ILCE6000L
  3. for Sony Camera (with no mention of specific models)

You know with certainty #1 is the Minolta/Sony shoe design
You can assme that #2 is the Minolta/Sony shes, used with adapter for the standard shoe A99
You have to assume #3 is for 'current line of cameras' after Sony re-adopted the standard hotshoe design

But this demonstrates the uncertainty created with a simple reference to 'Godox flash for Sony' in the question "Will it work with (unspecified camera)...there are 4 possible permuatations of responses, all of them valid because 'it depends...'

  1. iILC Sony camera + iILC flash...works
  2. iILC Cony camera + standard hotshoe flash...(??? I didn't research this!)
  3. standard hotshoe camera + iILC flash...works with adapter
  4. standard hotshoe camera + standard hotshoe flash...works

I'm not sure if I was clear. There is no camera I plan to mount the flash on. Just a standard ... I guess they are called cold shoe mounts? I don't really know what you call the thing you put on your light stand that holds the flash. I'm very new to off camera flash. I'll trigger the flash using the X-T2 trigger.

The Godox is a TT600s. Generally, TT600 are not camera dependent as they have no TTL, or much of anything else that ties itself to the camera brand except for the pin that tells the flash to fire. Since that pin is usually the same on all cameras except certain Sony models, we can assume the T600s is that oddball type of Sony mount. For instance, there is no TT600 for Fuji. Or Nikon or Canon. Any TT600 will work on any of F,C,N up to the limit that the flash supports - "pop", with most settings controllable by the remote.

Anyhow, I have several TT600 flashes and a V860IIf (I think that's the right model, TTL for Fuji in a TT600 style GN60 head.)

Basically, TT600s cost $60-$75 or so, and the Sony version can be had for about $45-47.

Thanks,

Mike.

I only want to mount in what I guess is a cold shoe? See my longer reply if you get a chance. -- Thanks, Mike

It comes back to physical characteristics of the shoe/foot

The conventional circa-1913 mechanical design that is now standardized as ISO 518:2006, measured on a Nikon D3400, the internal dimensions of standard shoe are 18.7 mm x 18.0 mm x 2.05 mm, the spacing between the 'teeth' of the shoe is 12.6 mm.

The Minolta/Sony shoe is called the 'Auto-lock Accessory Shoe (AAS)'. Originally, Minolta had made available a FS-1100 (8825-670) adapter allowing to mount the old flashes and controllers on new bodies, and a FS-1200 (8825-680) to do the reverse. The Sony offers the FA-HS1AM adapter. No dimensional information is available, and I have found no statement about mechanical fit. but
On YouTube I have seen a radio trigger designed to fit a standard hotshoe physically fit the Sony iISO hotshoe, but not trigger unless the Sony adapter was fitted to the Sony hotshoe.

The latest Sony shoe is called the 'multi interface shoe', and is described:

"the Multi Interface Shoe resembles a standard ISO 518 hotshoe with middle contact and frame ground and without any vendor-specific extra contacts, but additional electrical contacts are hidden under the front of the hotshoe. "

Therefore, the hotshoe is mechanically compatible with any ISO 518-based equipment".

All of the above information is NO PROOF it all fits (apart from the YouTube video I saw)

Thanks for doing all this research. I had no idea this was a fairly tricky question. I'll just wait until I find TT600 (regular) on sale or maybe an AD200 if I decide I want to play outside. Not really worth it to save $15.

Thanks,

Mike

Yeah, photographers have been jerked around by Sony, over the past decades, leading me to be skeptical about abandoning a true photographic company for a 'consumer electronics' company that has repeatedly abandoned markets and product lines over 4 decades...and I personally experienced several of them! Sony may make some great products, but their commitment is not demonstrated strongly.

In photography, Sony owners have endured

  • Sony flash foot
  • Sony Alpha (vs A-series) E-mount lens and body
