Hi all, I have a card with some important photos on it which I am trying to access but not having any luck.

- My Mac is not registering the card has been inserted.
- After inserting in my Canon T4i, the screen is sometimes is blank, sometimes says it cannot connect to the card, it must be formatted
- On a couple occasions I've pulled it out hot to the touch :(

I am afraid the images are lost, but hoping there is someone out there who can help.

Thank you.

Some things to try

If you get files off it, I recomment abandoning use of the card -- or at a minimum, FORMAT IN CAMERA before re-using it!

Have you recently done an OS update on the Mac?

One thing I notice when you describe the behavior in the T4i is the use of “sometimes”. Does the card ever behave properly in the T4i? If so, leave the camera on and immediately transfer the images using a direct cable to computer. Double check you’ve got everything important, then as Wilt suggests destroy the card.

It sounds as if the card has failed. Try all the recommendations above but if it's getting hot, that means it's pulling too much current. It's possible, though unlikely, that the reader is supplying too much voltage as well.

One thing you can try if all else fails, as a last resort only, is to re-format the card and before you do anything else with it, try a file recovery program to see if you can pull any images off of it once it's been re-formatted. I think you want to try the other non-destructive options first though as once re-formatted, the files are gone for sure.

Can you see them in camera? (did I miss you saying that?)
If yes can you download via cable?

Have you tried another computer? Card reader?

OP states

I'm guessing that the card is damaged and the best you might hope for is getting some of the images off of it if lucky.

Try it in a friends PC using a different reader, SD cards can be flaky and sometimes a different OS will be able to read them when another doesn't.

And don't format it until you have exhausted all other methods or recovery.

Then take a shotgun and blast it to dust just for peeing you off.

Do what you love and you will love what you do, that applies to both work and life.

As a last resort you can send it to a recovery company. I have a card that failed while I was shooting but haven't sent it out yet. It cannot be read by any reader or the camera. The company I looked at was reputable and it would cost around $225 to recover. Of course there is always a slight possibility that they can't

Yes, try on a Windows PC, use a card reader.
