When you say "affordable", what is that price range?

Unfortunately, without more 'qualifiers' to narrow down the choices, it is a bit like 'friend wants to get a car for her husband'!
Without more specifics, you will get nominations for electric cars, gas hybird, diesels, luxury sport cars, SUV, $25k economy or $50k luxury, and that does not help with suggestions that fit the desired characteristics.

Point & shoots: Pocketable? Rugged? Waterproof? With or without video? In what price range? Suitable for beginner, or someone with more experience? Very fast lens? Long zoom range?

There are articles like this one, which help a person read what is available, and hopfully narrow things down to a smaller subset of the universe of possibilities.

I'm totally with Wilt, without some more info, it's impossible to recommend anything. Probably the best thing to do is do a search for "2021 P/S cameras" and you'll get tons of recommendations. From those, you can narrow down the criteria as to what is important to you. Size? Cost? Zoom factor? Sensor size? Features? Video? and so many more variables. There is no one best camera for everything.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

If you are in the US, this camera would be perfect for her husband. On sale and comes with the same warranty as new.

Simply based on the requirements thus far, I feel this is the best option.

Generally speaking, TeamSpeed points you in the direction of a camera which I personally would like to use -- with the exception that it is physically larger and thicker than I would select for myself! Just an example of how one characteristic might make a great camera unacceptable to one buyer but not another.

Yes, and the camera would not work for me due to no OVF. I like composing with the LCD, but in bright sunlight the image is hard to see.

Btw, looks like the OP has left the building.

When you see my camera gear you'll think I'm a pro.
When you see my photos you'll know that I'm not.

Most likely had to go do more homework on the topic, before coming back with some apropos tidbits ...not like it's for her own husband who had made comments in the past.
