Thanks for all your replies. Nobody using Silver Efex Pro 3 ? I really like this program with all the different film simulations you can add. I'm supposed to couple photos you guys can tell me what you think.

I haven't done much B & W lately, but Silver Efex is my choice when I do. Although, now that I'm using DxO PL6. I have tried a couple of it's presets. So far I much prefer Silver Efex, often with extra tweaks ....

Well, i want my work to look like film but shooting film is very pricey and slow and a hassle, been there done that. I find Silver Efex Pro 3 fantastic, the film grain is taken from the real film grain and copied. Everybody has different goals none are wrong or right.

You asked.

I would say why have an imitation of something when you can have real thing. One of the reasons I shoot digital is for the way it looks. I never liked SE. It came with my M9 Monochrom. The way I work in digital is not a lot different form the way I work in a darkroom. My philosophy and approach are very similar. I first expose for the way I process and print. Each part of the process is equally important. And everything is all an extension of my vision. Not some automated preset.

Ok fair enough. SEP 3 Is not preset, i don't use the presets in that program. I process in LR first then i go into SE to fine-tune and add film grain. I don't like how digital looks, it looks plastic and lacks the depth that film has. Like i said i shot loads of film over the years now it's too much dam money for the whole process and I'm tired of carrying a 4x5 camera around.

I think im just trying to get a little of that film feel back without all the dragged out process of film.

I'm just saying the way I feel about it. Doesn't mean anyone else has to feel that way. I also am not a fan of LR either.

Banger of an image; I like how the softness is layered top to bottom.

For sure, and your previous comments hide a very deft philosophy of shooting.

To the OP, shooting in B&W doesn't seem to get the credit it deserves. Fuji has some fantastic film simulations that, with a little personalization, can really work well. Plus, shooting in B&W helps me to organize the lights and shadows. These examples are nearly SooC with a little work in Nik SE for the whites and darks because I like the point control:
