Like others, I don't think of it as an ideal. Versatility can be a good thing just as having a style can be a good thing in photography.

That's a more moderate statement than some I've seen, which just about praise photographers for "advancing" to the stage of finding a formula and exercising it consistently. Thanks for meeting me halfway.

If you look at many art forms you see many of the greats had a style. How they were able to put some of themselves in their art. . . . It's about not following others but finding ones own path.

Okay. What I have misgivings about is that a path too often walked becomes a rut.

I would never say any of the artists that I mentioned overall work as a product of being in a rut. Though like all creatives that happens form time to time. Again its about photographing anything and there is still a look that identifies the creator. That is not about the always photographing the same thing but about no matter what one creates there is still a piece of the creator in that piece. A visual signature when taking about photographs, painting or other visual art.

Ohlook the other way of looking at it is a path leads to places beyond the horizons. From my experience it is an exciting place to be.
Not in a rut but one where progress is made, new discoveries.
Put that into photography and it touches on much we've talked about.
The photographer on their path is recognised just as one of us on a pathway. Oh! There goes Richard, etc
Excuse the pun, but it's not plainly black and white

Richard

Pity you couldn't catch a train here or two crossing each other. Nice capture anyway. Those are some pretty stiff curves

The walker makes this a really good shot. A change from trains. Mind you, here he could be fined for trespassing on the railway. :-)
