Tom, I really enjoy seeing the birds that you post and I never observe here. This species and Verdins are photographed so well.

bit more colour today high up under Mt Roland
I think this is a Scarlet Robin (male) not a Flame Robin. Happy for others to pitch in please

Gorgeous birds not seen much at our place unfortunately

Richard, a beauty in any case!

I know next to nothing about either of the two you mention. I've looked online at numerous pics. The only thing I notice is that the head black seems to extend farther down the neck on the Scarlet and just to under the chin on the Flame. Based on that, I'd lean toward Flame, but it could also be angle of your image. Just something for you to consider. Let us know.

Hi Steve...

Thanks very much for your kind words. I appreciate it. If you ever get out this way, drop me a PM and I can treat your camera to a few of my little ones.

Tom

P.S. I don't know where you are in Maryland, but I'll be visiting Annapolis sometime around November 4. I may PM you later to see if you know of any bird spots near there.

Wonderful shot of this beautiful little robin, Richard! He really stands out nicely from the background.

Thanks Steve. I just found this
This species is similar to the Flame Robin but slightly smaller. The male is black above which extends to the throat so that the bird is completely hooded. The white fore-crown patch is larger. The breast is a rich scarlet colour and the belly is a dullwhite.

The (Flame ) male is described as slate grey

I'll look at my others tonight. It's more black than slate grey. That suggests Scarlet
Will post another later from different angle

Richard
