The male is black above which extends to the throat so that the bird is completely hooded. The white fore-crown patch is larger. The breast is a rich scarlet colour and the belly is a dullwhite. The (Flame ) male is described as slate grey I'll look at my others tonight. It's more black than slate grey. That suggests Scarlet Will post another later from different angle Richard, I suggest trying Cornell's Merlin app if you don't already have it on your phone or tablet. It's free, easy and incredibly amazing, capable of identifying photos AND sounds. I just noticed Merlin has added a birdpack for Southeastern Aus and Tasmania. Maybe it'll help you. I find it an indispensable aid.

I know next to nothing about either of the two you mention. I've looked online at numerous pics. The only thing I notice is that the head black seems to extend farther down the neck on the Scarlet and just to under the chin on the Flame. Based on that, I'd lean toward Flame, but it could also be angle of your image. Just something for you to consider. Let us know. Steve I've found a book just of Tasmanian birds that is very comprehensive and beautifully illustrated (Michael Morcombe - Pocket field guide to birds of Tasmania), along with another 'Birds on Farms (Tasmanian again). This male Superb Fairy Wren is nearly coloured completely but is still a bit lacking in the head area wit that grey tuft. Also his chest has some lighter spots They love this tree in the early morning outside my office so it's my go to place when the sun is just up I first spotted one of these a couple of days into my visit to Australia three years ago, superb little chaps and glad to say I got a relatively decent photo, but not quite as sharp as yours ! a photograph is nothing without a story
