Not sure why they need to be so long.

I can't speak for others, but all I know is mine is stand alone and doesn't support it but Canon DP4 supports it (and it's free) so I'm going to download it and give it a go. If I don't like it, I won't use it and hopefully someone makes CR3 files compatible with everything, like how CR2 files are.
