K9Kirk Likes neck nibbling and soft growls in the ear More info | Dec 23, 2022 11:58 | #21467 That's pretty cold, too cold for my old bones. Maybe someday GE will make a camera that makes hot coffee. “You can’t stop what’s comin’; it ain’t all waitin’ on you—that’s vanity.” - Uncle Ellis

Lame-Duck I have indeed had pine nuts More info Post edited 11 months ago by Lame-Duck. (2 edits in all) | Dec 23, 2022 15:23 | #21473 Very sharp, crisp image, Richard! Very nicely captured! nardes wrote in post #19459204 Here we have a Wonga Pigeon, a large rainforest pigeon, often found foraging on the ground on stocky pink legs. #2 is an Eastern Yellow Robin, a frequently seen and inquisitive bird. Both taken in the Lamington National Park. ![]() Cheers Dennis These are both wonderful, sharp images, Dennis! The Wonga Pigeon is unlike any pigeon I've ever seen. kd_reno wrote in post #19459236 What a great shot, Ken! The reflection in the water is perfect. The nice thing about this shot is that you can turn the photo upside down and the bird would be facing the opposite direction. Truly a very nice capture, SYS! I can't imagine how you can work the camera at -10f! My fingers would be frozen stiff. The setting is great, and those yellow eyes are focused right on my eyes. LD, or Mike

The hawk is a tough one. We saw it chasing some sparrows, so we got a good idea of size in the field. In that image the tail does look a bit long and round, suggesting Cooper's, but it looked very square when it first landed. The head looks very round to me. Cooper's usually, but not always, show a more square head with a flatter top. This bird has a very strong white eye-brow line, more common with Sharpies. I've got another shot with a partial view of the legs, which look skinny to me. Unfortunately, no shots of the front. I'm sticking with Sharpy, but I'm reducing my confidence level to 75% .I see your points. There are definitely features that point to both. That's why these two can be so hard to identify. Time waits for no one!

First time I’ve seen a falcon in my neighborhood, or photo’d one, for that matter. I might have missed this beauty altogether except my chickens were hanging out in the backyard with me and suddenly they froze in their tracks. That behavior usually means there’s a raptor in the area. I located the kestrel across the street and shot a few snaps as I approached, but she saw me and took off. Terrific shot! That's why these two can be so hard to identify. The local Audubon Society chapter used to have an annual bird ID panel, where a few local top birders would identify birds from pictures submitted by members and explain the basis for the ID. One of the rules set by the panel was "No accipiters". The moderator always slipped a couple in, and sometimes the panel members said naughty words Ken
