Is that fleshy bit under its beak normal?
I've seen similar on a wren and wondered if it had a disease?

Great close-up, Pippan! :-)
Was it a crop or did you get that close?

Pippan wrote in post #19483128 (external link)
Just a very slight crop Ray, this one and its mother and 2 siblings live around the picnic area and have little fear of humans, or me!.

Well there you go Ray
humans or me  :p:lol::lol::-P

Thank you, Mike. I agree, and it was peaceful out there in the morning. I'm going to have to pitch a tent there one night and catch them at sunrise. The park doesn't open until 8am.

Sounds like a good idea, Kirk!

I think that's a trait of a younger bird.

Terrific shot, Paul! It's interesting how birds intuitively know that their eggs have to be moved around in order to insure hatching.

A limpkin flying past two other limpkins feeding and a black-necked stilt. Taken at Myakka River State park, yesterday. It appears the removal of the dam there has made a difference in the water level. No boat tours now because of it.

These are both great captures, Kirk! I especially like the shot of the Limpkins.

Two beautifully captured shots of the Red-backed Fairy-wrens, Pippan! I can't get over how brilliant their red color is.

Lovely, uncluttered photos.

Thanks a bunch. It's not always easy to do in nature.

Red-tailed Hawk comes looking for dinner. (out my window again) This Red-tail is a frequent visitor to the neighborhood. Today I was lucky and he posted up in the sunlight. Was harassed by a squirrel and a Red-winged Blackbird in the short time I watched him.

A nuisance bird in some people's opinion, but the boat-tailed grackle is undeniably beautiful in the right light. And that's my opinion. ;-)a

Nice one! You captured the color well. Not a nuisance in my opinion. We have Common Grackles here and the Starlings are way worse when they gather in the fall and mess all over my truck. I just wash it. They all serve a purpose.

Ha ha, I'm not sure that whispering to crows would make them listen!

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Thanks sogs. Actually the beak is about the same size but the body is a fair bit smaller than the blue wrens, making the beak look relatively larger.
