Such a lovely shot! Stunning shot of the Northern Parula, Bill! I'm amazed how beautiful this bird is! Both are truly outstanding captures of the Black-headed Grosbeak, Ken! Great work! Incredibly nice shots of the Ruddy turnstone, Cog! That low camera angle can't be beat! Thanks, Mike. I don't mind laying down for such a shot if I don't lay down on a fire ant mound. Hate it when that happens. “You can’t stop what’s comin’; it ain’t all waitin’ on you—that’s vanity.” - Uncle Ellis

The eyebrow is useful in separating the two in winter plumage, but not necessarily while they are molting in the spring. If you look at photos in Cornell's Macaulay Library you can see many shots of BBPL with white starting over the eye. https://search.macaulaylibrary.org/catalog?taxonCode=bkbplo Your bird has a relatively stout bill. Golden bills are typically a bit shorter and thinner. Your bird still has a clean belly. Winter Golden has dingier underparts. Both would be turning black now. In flight or with the wings raised it's very easy to tell. Black-bellied have a whitish rump and tail, and the base of the underwing is black (black "armpits). Goldens have dark rumps and tails, and the underwing is all gray. And when all else fails, go with the odds. Black-bellied is common all along the Gulf Coast. American Golden-Plover only makes brief stops while migrating from South America to the Arctic tundra. Shorebirds are fun! I think you might already be hooked. I give up, lol! There's so much to know about birds and how their appearances can change. You're right, I like them a lot and North Beach always delivers. I got some shots of a white morph reddish egret yesterday (rather rare around here) and he didn't disappoint. I'll post them later. “You can’t stop what’s comin’; it ain’t all waitin’ on you—that’s vanity.” - Uncle Ellis

I think I need a lens that focuses at closer distances. I was laying down and this bird walked up to me and it was about 4 feet away, but this lens won't focus any closer than 9 ft. “You can’t stop what’s comin’; it ain’t all waitin’ on you—that’s vanity.” - Uncle Ellis
