Ok bit odd, as only 1/3 of a stop between the 100-400 and 100-500, I only stop down for closeup stuff and don't notice a prob.

Very similar to the Tamron which I was using until a year ago. I also ran that wide open, rarely used in closeup because of focus accuracy.

I guess the difference is the focal length, 500 will give more differential focuss than 400.

Oh it is f/8 quite early isn't it.

I remember drawing f-stop Vs focal length diagrams like that when comparing the Tamron with the EF100-400 and the RF100-500 both including teleconverters.
