This guy was perched in a tree on the side of a highway between a grocery store and lumber yard. Ended up creating quite a crowd of people snapping phone pics. Lucky I had the A1 in the car!

We (my wife, who's a much better bird spotter than me, and I) finally found some cooperative red-backed fairy-wrens, down at the bushy end of our road. These are tiny birds, even for fairy-wrens, at 4 - 5 inches. Here is the male in his attractive breeding costume ...

Thank you for your comment, Pippan! I agree with your observation. I took scores of pics of females and they all have what seems to me to be a strange cast. The shot was taken at about -10°F, on a brilliant sunlit day in countrysde layered with 1-2 ft of snow. Similarly, pictures I took of Blue Jays in the same conditions rendered some of the most striking blues I've seen on jays.
