Thank you for the explanation, Ken. I get your point about the spike...but it's still a terrific shot.

Thanks Mike. This also highlights a problem with the R5. You have to pay attention to small details like that when choosing a shot from a series. Life was much simpler with the 7D2, when I just picked the one that was in focus:lol:.

Beautiful capture, Alan! Such a colorful bird. But I've gotta ask, what is a dee?:-P

I really like these beautiful, cool looking birds, Paul. They are so well equipped for walking on water...well, water lilies and floating vegetation anyway. These two captures are outstanding!

Agree 150% with your comment! . Infact I will go further and say using the new AF of the R5 with features like animal eye detect etc was such a game changer for me that to a certain extent it took some of the excitement out of nailing that extra special shot. And thats primarily due to getting so many infocus keepers as against previous canon dslr's I have/had. It was like day and night the difference.

I also think a huge part of this massive keeper increase in the focus area is also coming from the DSLR to mirrorless change and the AF focusing being done on the main sensor rather than the old way of the DSLR using a seperate AF sensor in camera. Especially if your like me and shoot the majority of shots wide open in order to get max shutter speeds and lower ISO for fast moving objects. The DSLR's and lens I used were always needing lens calibration as I was always shooting wide open and if I had a penny for every shot I took where I was on the edge of the sharp centre of the DOF I would be a squillionare :) Thats all changed now. Every shot I see ( apart from bad atmospheric shooting conditions)if focus is aquired is absolutely spot on in the centre of the DOF sweet spot no matter how narrow it gets :)

Cheers

I saw my first long eared owl today! I had my camera with me too but unfortunately it was in my bag on my back and not in my hand. It was raining pretty heavily and I was actually looking for deer antlers at the time. I looked up and we locked eyes for a few seconds, I tried to slowly back out but it spooked and flew away.

So I had to settle for a cropped pic of this rough legged hawk later on who didn’t mind his picture being taken.

Reprocessed an old photo with Topaz. I think it improved sharpness.

Thanks LD, I don't think I've posted a picture of one before because they are among the most common birds around here. My wife is a bit disgusted that I'd even bother photographing one!

They definitely don't get much love as they are so common here but, when you take the time to look, they are actually really cool :)

This little Jacky Winter was so inquisitive, flitting around me in the deep, dark mangrove forest behind Casuarina Beach. I was clicking away, thinking of the great photos I'd be getting of this bird I'd never photographed before. Somewhat disappointed to see the camera LCD completely black! I'd just come into the forest from the bright sunny beach, thinking I was on Auto ISO. Ended up with images well more than 5 stops underexposed. So I thought this could be an exercise in recovering such an image. Not too bad all things considered (thanks Adobe and Topaz), especially considering the incredibly tiny photosites the 90D has on its sensor.

Thank you for the compliments Mike, much appreciated.

Our local University is passionate about conservation.
Their ponds have a natural appearance.
They're not heavily chemically treated and sterilized, leaving nice platforms for birds to walk and hunt on.
Happy trails.
