Prince of Orange. Gravesend. Kent. UK.
According to the link below, there was a few name changes and a few 'Prince of Oranges' around - but I ended up with this one.

Interesting again thanks Ray
Certainly a large building
Certainly seen some changes, but couldn't work out the narrative in that link

As well as fancy lighting from 3,000 colour changing LEDs
The reaction from people is total amazement. They are coming into something that looks like it used to in 1932

Seems at odds with each other.

I had difficulty finding a good historic. This pub is situated on a busy cross road. I’ve passed this pub 3 or 4 times a week for very many years but have never been in and I only took notice to take this picture - funny, init?:-) l tend to use the country pubs.
A lot of pubs in the area seem to be either demolished or have a change of use. Good to see this one surviving.

Thanks, dr. But I am only scratching the surface, with some looking so dilapidated they would only be record shots for history, but having said that, I suppose even those have a valuable place in history.

The Bull. In the small village of Horton Kirby. Kent. UK.

Not much history available at present, but the landlord tells me that the Bull has been in its present position for about 100 years and it was, previous to that, located at 12&13 in the small cottages just seen to left of my lower picture and was named The Bull & Bavenstack.
I have a small reminiscence because my uncle owned the working village forge on the opposite corner of the cross roads - behind the electricity pole and the village notice board in the right of the top picture.
One of the pub bars, at that time, had a large and intriguing collection of Toby Jugs on display - I went back a good few years later but the Toby Jugs were no longer there and the Landlord had no knowledge of them.
Incidentally, on right hand side of that lower picture, at pavement level, you can see the cellar trap doors where the beer kegs were lowered in by sliding them down a metal chute sometimes with a rope securing the keg to prevent it sliding too fast - the drayman had control of the rope. By tradition, I seem to remember, the good Landlord would always reward the draymen for their thirsty work.:-) Drunk in charge of horse and cart.:-)
Re Lower picture again - apologies for the 'Lens flare' near the centre of the picture - I was shooting into the sun.:-(

Normally the dreymen would indeed lower the barrels down the cellar ramp Ray. The method that was most common was to have a ring at the top of the ramp and the rope was secured to that, then it was passed under the barrel and back over the top. That way the dreyman had a 2 to 1 mechanical advantage and the barrels could be easily managed. I would think that a 'hogs head' would take at least 2 dreymen?

The drey wagon was here this morning when we were walking past. It's a strange name for a strange pub, but the beer is very good!

The Smoking Dog

I have no idea where the name came from and unable to get any history on the place -?

Looks like a carpenter’s workshop or something similar.
Years ago I was asked to take a picture of an old chap with big scruffy beard sitting with his equally scruffy old dog. The dog was obediently sitting next to him - human-like - with the pipe in his mouth just like your pub sign.:-)

I forgot to say that just a few yards down from the pub is a bronze plaque set in the footpath on both sides of the road showing where the old East Gate was situated. I will get a photo of it IF I remember -?

That is quite some coincidence Ray and I have to admit that it's something that I've never seen. I have to say that I don't like pipes at the best of times. They are nearly as bad as cigars

The Fighting Cocks. Another pub in the small village of Horton Kirby. Kent. UK.
There are two thriving pubs in the village.
This was my great grandparents local c1900'ish.:-)
The pub's garden backs onto the River Darent.
The No Entry sign on the door is part of the pub's COVID control measures. Entry was gained from the side door.
Not much history obtainable but it shows a Landlord or owner registered the in 1858.

Come on, John, just imagine yourself driving along the open road on a lovely summer’s day, one hand on the steering wheel and the other elbow resting on the open window with a fill of Balkan Sobranie in in your pipe, and then when you do get home you pour out a nice vintage Sherry and light up a nice fat Havana cigar. :p

Well, at least he didn’t seem to have experimented in the cellars.:-)

As you’re in York, Phoenix, there’s just gotta be a ‘Dick Turpin’.-?

Nice shot - thanks.
