So our first DSLR was a Canon T3i. It is basically the camera I started to take sports photos with and it is still my wife's primary camera. Have always been pretty happy with the photos. Have used it as a knock around camera as well as a vacation camera at times when traveling lighter.

This year we were going to do some video of track races for the high school my daughter runs for, realized that the T3i does not have AF for video. I was able to borrow a SL3 to use with my EF-S 18-135 NanoUSM, which really worked pretty well. I liked the touch screen and simple menus on the SL3 for the non camera people doing video.

Thinking of updating the T3i but not really sure where to go. I like the rear touch screen for changing settings. The SL3 has a pretty simple AF with only 9 points but does have the Digic 8 processor. You can still find a 80D around or maybe the T8i. I probably do not need the 90D, with already having the 7DII and R6. I may try to do a bit more video with this new body, having seen how HD video looks on a DSLR body.

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions

Hi,

So you have a 7D2 and R6 and you're looking to get something lesser than that just for video?

How about an M50 or M50 II, if you're not going to use your 7D2/R6.

Very best,

Very best,

A consideration to keep in mind....Any Canon M-mount camera will require the use of an adapter in order to mount an EF lens with long eough FL to be useful for sports...the longest FL lens offerened in M-mount is only 200mm when zoomed.

I use EFS lenses on my M50, still makes for a small package. 250mm on a crop body for track events is plenty. Any lens that is being used on the T3i will fit on the M50, and the adapter is cheap and not really that large. Any of the 3rd party adapters work pretty well, but a spotty record from the viltrox EF/EFS adapter.

Not necessarily something lesser, but simpler as it would be a camera for my wife and the video use might be a secondary consideration. Sorry if that was not clear. I don't think the M mount is going to be going forward and I have EF and EF-S lenses already.

If the M adapter works as well as the EF-RF adapter, that might be a good alternative. Although battery life might be a consideration for a track meet that will last several hours, although a lot of that is down time between races.

I bought 3-4 aftermarket batteries, the M50 is a bit of a hog.

Very few races will go more than 12-13 minutes at a time but there are a number of races throughout the day. Not worried about battery life in routine use, my wife is more of a "snapshot" person.

The other place this camera might be used is for travel. If we are going somewhere where a lot of photo opportunities exist, I will likely take one of the bigger cameras and several lenses but sometimes we have a short or local day trip where having a unobtrusive camera would be nice.

If you have done video with the M50, would the rolling shutter effect come into play if video taping from a tripod for races on a track? Or does the panning have to be fairly fast to cause the rolling shutter effects?

Every time I consider the M50 as I think it's a great little camera, the battery size puts me off.

I am used to carrying a couple of extra batteries for the 7DII or now the R6 when I do sports events, so not really a big deal I guess. The Canon EF -M adapter is pretty expensive.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, by size I meant not big enough to last very long. Nothing to do with the weight.

If you set up the M50 properly like always use the VF and have eco turned on, the battery life will extend. Also aftermarket batteries are very cheap and since they are so small, several can fit into a case pocket.

I can get about one full rugby game in one battery currently, which is about 200-300 shots.
