I'll sum this up as best I can. My plan is to work my full time job and transition to full time photographer. The job I had, the insurance covered a name brand medication I am required to take with a doctor's authorization. There was talk of downsizing so I had an opportunity to go to a better full time job. The problem here is their insurance won't cover my medication.

Since my plan is to be self employed, go full time, it might be cheaper to go ahead and get my own insurance policy (one that with the doctor's approval will be covered)

So my question is for anyone that has an individual insurance policy, who do you use and what's roughly the cost?

Not that I have a insurance policy (covered through wife’s Blue Cross/Blue Shield) but one thing I learned from a similar situation to you is a generic substitution for a brand name is covered. Now, talking about our crazy health system, what is suppled as the generic is 100% identical (packaging and labeling) as the brand name but at about 70% of the brand name cost. That could be because the generic version only came out about one year ago.

Depending on your income level, you may be eligible for a massive subsidy for insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

You need to be aware that ANY medical insurance company has many different plans...an employer or an individual has only chosen ONE of many alternative options. So any input you get from folks on this forum might vary considerably in cost and in coverage terms, even if all of them has a policy from the same company! Even those under Medicare can have difference in coverage, such as my mother vs. my wife and I -- all three have coverage by same company, yet my mother's coverage differs from mine/my wife.

One plan might have lower copay but higher premiums, another plan might have higher copay but lower premiums.

The other variable is that medical care costs more in certain areas than it costs for the same services elsewhere. Medicare reimbursement to doctors has a geographic adjustment factor in recognition of local variations in cost...it is not simply state by state, but can be 'what part of (state)' that varies medical costs to the insurer.

And there are choices from the 'for profit' companies vs. the 'not for profit' companies which offer health insurance coverage.
Lastly, consider plans offered by your state, which resulted from the Affordable (Health)Care Act (a.k.a. 'Obamacare')
