I have tried to use my iphone for pictures like that, and I have yet to really enjoy the images out of the camera. I like the digital camera for that so I can easily control a number of settings, focal lengths, etc. and if I have to stitch multiple images, I can get a consistent exposure on every image. It is much harder with the iphone to do these things.

Yes, you can even see the black border on the images in your post, even without any kind of post processing to pull it out. All of the boxes are darker and outlined in a black border. Here is a crop where I simply raised the exposure bar, every place where there is a supposedly single color area is outlined in black. The 7D2 obviously doesn't show this phenomenon, and that is because it is a real photographic tool, unlike most of the cell phones today that are more digital in nature than a realistic capture (ie. so much software running on the image data to present a "wow" factor to the users).

So in the Motorola Z3 effort to 'improve' upon the presentation of the photo, it outlined things and also exaggerates some of the artifact present in my shot target!

The target was obtained from the web and printed on my inkjet, and it shows artifact in some places visible to the naked eye. For example,

  1. in the converging horizontal lines, the artifact seen in the target starts at about 9.5 and gets stronger as the lines converge.
The Z3 image makes the artifact even worse than it is in the target and the artifact starts in the vicinity of 8.5 and gets worse converging to the left.
  2. In the round set of lines with a square, the original target has no moire,
but the Z3 creates a moire in that area.

All because of the software attempt to 'improve' the presentation of the Z3 image.

I used to use 645 professionally along with 4x5 monorail; I had abandoned 135 format generally for pro level work, it had become my 'travel camera' only....IOW I was engaged in work that would stand up to critical scrutiny, by private clients and by commercial customers.
But today, I normally shoot the 'serious stuff' today (retired, hobbist shooting) with an APS-C dSLR (7DII); I have a FF dSLR (5D) for use of my 24mm shift lens for architectural work. When I do not wish to be burdened with the bulk and weight of a dSLR kit, I put a Canon Powershot S110 in my pocket. Heavy all day hiking or speinding the day riding amusement park rides are two examples of when the dSLR kit stays locked up in the hotel. It is 12MPixel, (4000x3000) with a small sensor, 1/1.7" (7.44 x 5.58 mm)

This photo is shot with Powershot S110, resized and cropped to 15000x5400 pixels and printed to 20" x 60" canvas, hanging in my home

, which makes the image on the canvas 200X enlargement, and it stands up to scrutiny at very close distances (a 9" tall section of the canvas).

...you can make out flotation rings on the front and the pilot house of the boat, and hikers in red and yellow jackets to the right. (This photo of the canvas has unavoidable glare at the left due to a window on the opposite wall, but it helps to visualize the texture of the canvas.)

A comparson of S110 vs dSLR give full appreciation for leaving the big stuff behind!

That must look fantastic hanging on your wall -beautiful shot!
