Tonight I plan to try my first stacking picture. I got deep sky stacker and plan on giving it a go. I live in a yellow area of the pollution map. I plan on trying the milky way tonight. I have a Canon 6d m2 with a Canon 17-40mm F4 L lens. I purchased a Hoya red starscape filter. Says it helps add reds and filter light pollution. What would you do. Filter or no filter. Thanks in advance.

Work without filters first, get used to getting workable data first. Most of the "pollution" filters are gimmicks unfortunately on a color sensor without spending quite a lot and going very long on exposure to compensate the narrowband peak low transmissions. Signal trumps filtering in most cases, even with lots of light pollution. But it of course depends on what you're doing and what your processing experience is. If this is just a single long exposure shot and that's it, well, it's whatever is easy for you. But still, do it with and without that filter and see what you think.

Very best,

So I did go out last night. Used 30mm at F 4.5. Did 100 exposures at 13seconds. Did about 50 flats, 50 bias and 50 darks. After stacking it and using photoshop i was able to see some gas and dust. I think my focus was off a little. It was also the first stacked picture I've tried. I did get results but not what I was hoping for. I'm sure it takes practice. Not to mention my editing skills are pretty basic. I did not use the mentioned filter. the image turned out to large to post. I need to go back and figure out how to save it as a lower quality so I can post. Im thinking about going out saturday and giving it another shot. It is supposed to be clear in my area. Last night i was in a yellow area on the pollution chart. i can drive 35min to get to a green area. Any suggestions on anything i can try other than just the milkyway on saturday. I do have a 70-300 canon L series lens that i can use to try a more deep space object.
