If the AF is up to snuff, a 35-150 f2-2.8 would make a awesome indoor event/sports lens

I doubt it.
Tamron 17-28 2.8, 28-75 2.8, 28-200 2.8-5.6, 70-180 2.8, 150-500 5-6.7 are all great lenses.
No reason to think this 35-150 won't be great too.
Sigma 35 1.2, All four of the I series, 85 1.4 DG DN Art are great too.

All above are Sony mount only (or L mount too for Sigma)
This really is a very different situation from the past couple of decades or so.
