Any comments - good or bad? Be kind to the newbie, but I'm trying to learn. Thanks for any and all input.

Disregard. This image looks bad, nothing like my monitor or print. I'll try again to do it right.

What we have here is a combination of some simple misadventures - each of which can be easily explained.

Regarding any difference between the posted image and your original, that is likely due to the way it was prepared for posting. It is 800 pixels in the longest dimension, and that is the max. dimension per the guidelines. However, the guidelines permit up to 100 kB and if you follow those two guidelines, it requires a JPG compression Quality factor (Photoshop's scale) of 4 or no higher than 5. In this example the file size is ony about 35 kB, which means that the Quality factor is rock bottom. In other words, if you do everything else correct, you would have a considerably better image posted here if you used a higher JPG compression Quality, such that the file size is just under 100kB.

Moving on to other issues, the aperture used was f2.2 which is going to give a rather shallow Depth of Field (DOF) and the ISO setting was 800, which should not produce much noise, but will certainly be more than if it were set to ISO 100. Considering that you used 1/200" with a normal lens, perhaps you could have stopped down one more stop and used 1/100" and gained a bit more DOF.

Clearly, you would have appreciated having a bit more light, because then you could have stopped down more and used a lower ISO setting - each of which could conceivably given a little cleaner image.

However, having said all that, the picture is a very good picture with a good pose and a very interesting facial expression. I think the focus is about where it should be, and the exposure and color balance look fine.

So, for a grab shot, it is very good.

The size and quality of the picture are fully established by the number of pixels, only. Since the picture is 800 pixels high, that means that if your display system is running at 90 dpi, for example, then the image will be 8.9" high. The dpi value embedded in the file is irrelevant to anything except in the way some printers might print the image.
