I've used POTN on Chrome for... well.. ever... but recently it started behaving strangely: the purple NOTIFICATIONS button at the top of a window would appear for a fraction of a second, then disappear and show only a red PM button (even though I have no new PMs).

I logged out, and deleted all cookies for the photography-on-the.net domain.

Now I'm unable to log back in again (the Log in button does nothing). If I click on the Register to forums button I get a broken screen as below:

This is on Chrome Version 92.0.4515.131 (Official Build) (64-bit), which is apparently up to date.

Switching to Microsoft Edge, everything looks OK and I can log in (and that's how I'm writing this post). Are there known issues with Chrome, or is it just me?

I use Chrome (latest) daily.

Better to clean up your browser cache. The easiest way to do it is:
1. press F12 (a window opens).
2. In POTN page, click page reload icon and keep mouse down until you see a menu:
3. pick from the menu "Empty Cache and Hard Reload".

If that does not help, try without VPN if you use one.

Didn't know about that trick to force a cache emptying - thanks.

Unfortunately, I tried it and it didn't seem to make any difference. I don't use a VPN, though do have an AdBlocker; but I disabled it on POTN.

My only guess is that you have javascript denied on POTN for some reason, or completely off.

Here the code served has been the same for a long time, no changes have been done here.

You could check what F12 -> "console" and "network" tabs tell you about errors.

I am having a similar issue in firefox. I get a java error if I open the login link in a new tab. I tried it on 4 machines and the only browser I can get it to work in is opera. Chrome, firefox and edge all give a similar issue, private window or not, all the machines are different and even unlinked accounts(not signed in) cause it. Below is the error saying to enable java but it is enabled on all systems. I thought it was noscript at first but seeing it it did it on machines that didnt have noscript installed and had brand new installs of firefox and chrome rules out an issue with the plugin. No vpn on any of the systems, everything is updated and working normally. potn is the only site I am unable to access.

Please enable Javascript now

PLEASE ENABLE JAVASCRIPT ON YOUR BROWSER SETTINGS, THEN USE THE LOG IN BUTTON ABOVE TO LOG IN.

Maybe somewhat similar here; in that if I right click on the Log in button and select Ppen in new tab I get a page with the "Please enable Javascript now" text. Left clicking on the Log in button does nothing.

But I do have javascript enabled, and there are no per-site exclusions.

I don't know if it's of any use to Pekka, but this is what I see on the Register to forums page, with the developer tools showing the page source:

What it tells me that javascript is working fine, as else you would see the "noscript" tag contents as The Fox wrote in POST 19272644. That message appears only when there is no javascript available in browser (it is not my check code, it is html standard code).

This tells me some aspects of your page have not been properly loaded. Searching with Google, this happens elsewhere, too, with other sites. No clear solution has been given.

I would love to solve this, but there is not much to do unless I can reproduce it.

If you fully cleared your cache and situation is the same, the things to try:

1. Disable hardware acceleration in browser. Sounds odd, but in Firefox this has helped.

2. Start browser in safe mode (without any plugins). Ingognito mode = safe mode in Chrome. With firefox: https://support.mozilla.org …ns-themes-to-fix-problems (external link)

3. Try with ingognito mode (no cookies will be saved, but page should load normally).

4. Try with a VPN service.

5. If possible, try with another ISP. Some ISP's do transparent page caching, meaning they serve your cached pages without asking. If their cache is stale, you get broken pages.

Do F12 again and see what kind of "console" errors you get in registration page. There are always some errors related to jquery file, those are normal and acceptable at the moment.

---

I checked the javascript (again) in https://seositecheckup.com/analysis (external link) and it came error free.

I tried all the above on multiple machines(desktop, notebook and 2 servers in different parts of the country). Tested with and without a vpn, tried on multiple networks with multiple isps and it fails for me in all browsers except for opera on my notebook. It is weird, it started on my notebook a few days ago then moved to all the other machines. I completely wiped my install of firefox and reinstalled it, no plugins and all the security disabled with the same result. Here is the console from FF for you to look at, not much in there. I am betting there was a recent update to policies for both firefox and chrome since I cant get it to work in either of those at the moment. Not a massive deal, just annoying. Hopefully this helps and it might be an issue for more people.

We do not use feature policy directives at all.
See https://gf.dev/feature-policy-test (external link)

Feature policy is an experimental feature for developers defining allowed capabilities of client browser. https://developer.mozilla.org …s/Web/HTTP/Feature_Policy (external link)

As you get those they will break the page load process. They must origin from some other instance than POTN, which means a proxy, script injection, router, isp, browser, plugin, firewall. corporate network policy... I can only guess.

I have a very similar problem using Firefox but POTN okay on Chrom,e! So, I have a gut feeling that it is not just a browser problem.

After a lot of trial and error, I have started using open-source Waterfox (external link) Surprisingly, Waterfox supports the Chrome Web Store &the Opera Web store and the Firefox Store. . Does not hog memory either. Love Waterfox which is now my default browser.

Just for the record, what is your "settings -> privacy & security" mode (standard, strict/custom) in Firefox?

Just the normal setting. Strict and Custom are not set

I went though and checked everything else. Seems to effect a lot of machines I have with all different browsers/physical locations/ISPs. Something happened and I couldnt even begin to imagine what since it seems like it isnt an isolated issue with users. I recently saw something similar with remote desktop all of a sudden just not working one day for windows 10 users, no similarities or anything between users and that still hasnt been fully figured out.

I tried everything and the only fix was different browsers resolved it. Hopefully someone figures it out since it is a bit annoying to use it in a different browser though not the worst thing in the end.
