Anyone buy a WD Red NAS drive? You might be eligible for some cash. Not a big payoff mind you as the lawyers generally are the only ones to make out, especially in a class action suit.

Interesting but really only a token effort! I purchased 2 x 6 TB Red drives, one failed within warranty that was replaced. A few months ago my other drive failed, outside of warranty. I installed the RMA drive I received into my NAS. It works but I get weekly warnings that it is an unsupported drive and when I googled the drive it is SMR.

To be honest I have lost faith in WD and I am currently sourcing replacement drives, probably Seagate Ironwolfs. $7 a drive as compensation is not much consolation for being out of pocket by nearly €500 for the purchase of the Red drives....

WD have lost me as a customer.

Wow, two failures for two attempts!

Something to avoid, like COVID.

I have had similar bad luck with Samsung HD used by HP as standard drive in their desktop PCs for a while...original Samsung started to fail within the PC warranty so HP replaced it, the second Samsung (the replacement) is having issues now. Just too lazy to replace it with SSD, since it is a second computer which gets little use.
I also had a WD Mybook USB-connected harddrive which failed. Curious, I hacksawed the HD out of the WD enclosure, and found the HD itself to be operating normally, the USB and controller hardware inside the WD enclosure had failed.

Seagate Exos has been looking very attractive when it's time to up-size the NAS in about a year...hopefully by then we'll be well into 20TB+ HAMR drives :)
