My son is starting his sophomore year in college. He played ball last year but said the rggor of being a student athlete was more than he imagined, and is not playing this year. The staff asked him if he was willing to do some photography for the team since he is an insider. Sounds kind of fun... but here is the rub. His gear is totally and completely not up to the task. And I am not able to help him buy a bunch of new gear. So I am looking for some used gear ideas. I used to be a Canon Sports shooter and have most of my lenses still. The only bodies I have left are an original 1D and a 7D. I got some great stuff in the day on these... but I am guessing expectations are the 4 mpx count cut it.

I now shoot with Sony... but I can't "lend" my stuff. So I've been thinking of either a used 7D mk II. Or a Canon 1D mk 4. 16 mpx would be enough. But I've never shot the !V. I used to shoot II n's and then DXs. How good is its high ISO performance. Can you safely go to 3200, or even 6400? If he could stretch to 6.400, he would be able to get most of what he needs to do. My slowest lens is 2.8.

Anyway..... no, its not an A1 or an R5. But will it do?

I had a 1DIV for a number of years and enjoyed shooting with it.

Physically, the camera is a bit smaller than a 1DX and I found it very comfortable.

When shooting night football I shot at up to ISO 12,800 and as long as I didn't crop a lot I found it acceptable. If possible I tried to keep the ISO to 8,000 or less. I used single point focus with just the center point and found it to work well.

It is a 1.3x crop sensor so it was typically paired with a 300mm lens, giving the equivalent of a 400mm on a full frame sensor. Its 10 fps is enough for typical sports use.

I'd say for the low price you will pay today it is a great choice.

Perfect... that is the feedback I had hoped for. My Mk II Ns maxed out at 1600 and in a pinch 3200... but above that were useless. This really helps

Far from being a "learner rig" the 1D mk4 is a great camera and is very clean up to 3200 iso. Even higher is useable, if you can put up with a little noise.

The original 7D is a pretty good sports camera. I bought a used one as my first step up from the Rebel series. That said, the 7DII is quite a bit better, both in image quality and AF
