Can someone help me with the best way to mark photos in camera so I can locate them quickly when I export them. I am a sports photographer and when shooting for our local paper I am often under a deadline to get pics to the paper. I would like to mark photos in camera while shooting a game. I usually have time between plays or points to chimp my pics. I am shooting with a Canon 1DX Mark II.

On some Canons there's a dedicated button on the back marked "RATE". When you're looking at an image already on the card, each time you press rate it increases the number of stars of the rating : 1-2-3-4-5-no rating. Pressing it again goes back to one star. I assume it will transfer that rating when exported.

I have a R6 and the in camera ratings do not seem to import into Lightroom. I wish they did.

The time you are wasting trying to mark a photo would be better served by doing more shooting, it's like missing that one amazing shot while chimping the last one taken.

I am trying to find the quickest way to get pics in by a short deadline and thought that if I could mark some good pics as I shoot that would help when I am trying to find pics for submission.

First I was going to say this: I have a friend who shoots sports and uses Photo Mechanic software to select photos for editing. It takes in and shows in-camera ratings.

Then, I figured out how to do it in Lightroom, with help from the Google.

First, find out which card your camera is set to use for playback if you save to two cards. This is important because the star ratings are only written to the card that the file that you are viewing on the back of your camera came from.

In my Canon cameras it is the first setting in the wrench menus. You can specify which card to playback from.

Import your photos from that card into Lightroom. Select them all in the Library module and then, from the Metadata menu select "Read Metadata from Files". Your star ratings will now show, or at leas mine did.

This worked from both my R6 and 5DIV.

Yes, that is how sports photography works. . A lot of shooting for a few seconds, then some down time waiting for the next play or the next event. . Of course there is time to rate the images you already shot with no risk of missing anything.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
